Israel-Hamas ceasefire live updates: Hostage-prisoner exchange delayed amid final ceasefire phase

The release of over 600 Palestinian prisoners and detainees was delayed "until the release of the next hostages has been assured, and without the humiliating ceremonies," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

What we know

  • The seventh and final hostage-prisoner exchange of the first phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal is underway.
  • The release of Palestinian prisoners had been postponed until 8 p.m. local time (1 p.m. ET), but then was further delayed. The reason for the delay remains unclear.
  • The hostages freed today are: Eliya cohen, Omer Shem Tov, Omer Wenkert, Tal Shoham, Avera Mengistu, and Hisham Al-Sayed.
  • Israel was set to release approximately 600 Palestinian prisoners and detainees — the largest group since the start of the ceasefire. The group was to include 151 prisoners with life or high sentences and 445 detainees taken from Gaza since Oct. 7.
  • After delays, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced early Sunday local time that the release would be delayed "until the release of the next hostages has been assured, and without the humiliating ceremonies."

Israel delays prisoners' release until next hostage release 'has been assured'

The release of the more than 600 prisoners and detainees set to be freed today as part of Israel's ceasefire agreement with Hamas has been delayed, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu cited "Hamas’s repeated violations, including the ceremonies that humiliate our hostages and the cynical exploitation of our hostages for propaganda purposes" in announcing the delay.

He said the release was delayed "until the release of the next hostages has been assured, and without the humiliating ceremonies."

The decision marks a violation in the ongoing agreement. Earlier today, Hamas released six Israeli hostages as part of the deal.

It’s not clear what Israel’s decision means for the future of the deal.

The release of the Palestinian prisoners — the largest group to be freed under the ceasefire agreement — was part of the final prisoner and hostage exchange of the first stage of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. It would have included 445 prisoners who were not sentenced to time in prison, as well as 24 women and children.

Earlier today, the Ramallah and Al-Bireh governate in the Israeli occupied West Bank said the release of the prisoners has been postponed until 8 p.m. local time (1 p.m. ET).

Israel's decision to delay prisoner release is 'organized terrorism,' Palestinian Prisoners' club says

The Palestinian Prisoners' club called Israel's decision to delay the release of over 600 Palestinian prisoners a form of "organized terrorism against the prisoners and their families."

The organization accused Israel of abusing the prisoners and threatening their family members with arrest and death.

"The prison system continues to torture the prisoners, and all the occupation agencies continue to threaten the prisoners and their families, which is an extension of a policy that it has used over many years, but it has clearly escalated during the recent liberation operations," the organization said in a statement.

Israel has not provided an explanation as to why it is delaying the release of the Palestinian prisoners, which was part of the final prisoner and hostage exchange of the first stage of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

Israel will fully rehabilitate former hostage Hisham al-Sayed, Netanyahu says

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country will fully rehabilitate former hostage Hisham al-Sayed, an Israeli Palestinian Bedouin hostage who was released by Hamas today following over a decade in Gaza.

Al-Sayed, a Palestinian Bedouin citizen of Israel, was kidnapped after crossing the border into Gaza in 2014.

In conversation with his father, Shaaban al-Sayed, Netanyahu expressed regret that it had taken this long to get him out of Gaza, and said al-Sayed will be provided with medical treatment and fully rehabilitated.

Earlier today, Al-Sayed was transferred to the custody of the Israel Defense Forces separately from the other hostages, without the ceremony that other hostages had been given before their release. Hamas’ military wing Al Qassam told NBc this was “out of respect for his family and the Palestinians of 1948," referring to the mass displacement of Palestinians from the state of Palestine as a result of the increase of Jewish immigration and resulting conflict, per the United Nations.

Six Israeli hostages released by Hamas today were reunited with their loved ones.

Tal Shoham, Omer Shem Tov, Omer Wenkert and Eliya cohen were kidnapped by Hamas during the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks and among six hostages released in the final exchange of the first phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire.

Ethiopian-Israeli Avera Mengistu and Israeli Palestinian Bedouin Hisham al-Sayed were also freed after being held in Gaza for over a decade.

Hostages advocacy organization calls for gathering in Israel tonight

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum is calling upon the Israeli public to gather at Hostages Square tonight to demand the return of the 63 remaining hostages, according to a statement released by the group.

This comes after Hamas released six Israeli hostages today: Tal Shoham, Avera Mengistu, Hisham al-Sayed, Eliya cohen, Omer Shem Tov and Omer Wenkert. So far, 192 Israeli hostages have been released by Hamas, including 147 who are alive and 45 who are dead, per Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The entire nation watched today as Omer, Tal, Eliya, Omer, Hisham, and Avera were returned — their lives saved thanks to the agreement," the organization said in the statement. "There are still 63 hostages waiting for us to save them! We won't stop until we see all hostages return — the living for rehabilitation and the deceased for proper burial."

Hamas calls Israel's delay of Palestinian prisoners release 'a flagrant violation' of agreement

NBc News

In a statement, Hamas spokesperson Abdul Latif Al-Qanou called Israel's delay of the release of Palestinian prisoners "a flagrant violation of the agreement" between the group and the country.

The release of the over 600 prisoners was initially expected to happen earlier today, in exchange for the release of six Israeli hostages — which were released earlier as planned.

"While Hamas responded to the efforts of mediator to make the exchange process a success, war criminal Netanyahu continues to procrastinate and delay the release of prisoners," Al-Qanou said in the statement released this evening.

The group is calling on the mediators of the agreement to put pressure on Israel "to respect the ceasefire agreement and implement its provisions without procrastination and delay."

Hisham al-Sayed was the sixth and final hostage to be released by Hamas today.

Al-Sayed was transferred to the custody of the Israel Defense Forces separately from the other hostages, without the ceremony that other hostages were given before their release. Hamas' military wing Al Qassam told NBc this was "out of respect for his family and the Palestinians of 1948."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement this evening that the return of six Israeli hostages today "is a moment of joy and relief for their families and for the entire people of Israel."

"Our hearts are bursting with excitement and we embrace the families," Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu added that the body of Shiri Bibas was returned "to the grave of Israel tonight."

"The heart of the nation is broken by the abduction and brutal murder of Shiri and her children Ariel and Kfir."

A total of 192 hostages have now been returned to Israel, Netanyahu said in the statement, adding that 147 were alive and 45 dead.

"Hamas remains in possession of 63 abductees," he said. "The Israeli government is committed to continuing to work resolutely to return all of our abductees home — the living to their families and the dead to a proper burial in their own country."

Netanyahu did not mention the release of the over 600 Palestinian prisoners that was expected today, which was delayed by Israel.

Israel is set to release four journalists today, according to the center for the Protection of Journalists.

Muhammad Imad Al-Sultan, Khader Abdel Aal, Baha Al-Ghoul, and Hamza Radwan are set to freed, it said, as part of the seventh batch of prisoners released by Israel during the first phase of the ceasefire agreement.

The committee to Protect Journalists, a separate organization, said the Israel-Gaza war has killed 170 journalists, with a further 45 imprisoned. It said 162 Palestinian, two Israeli and six Lebanese journalists had been killed since Oct 7. 2023.

The IDF has repeatedly said it does not deliberately target journalists.

Israel set to release prisoners first arrested in the 1970s

Freddie clayton

Israel is set to release ten prisoners today who were first arrested before the Oslo accords were signed in 1993, a series of landmark agreements that sketched out a roadmap to peace but ultimately crashed in a blaze of mutual mistrust and renewed violence.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ club said these prisoners were released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange, but were re-arrested in 2014 during a cross-border war between Israel and Hamas.

Among them is Nael Barghouthi, who was first arrested in 1978, and Alaa al-Bazian, who it said was arrested in 1979, before he was released and re-arrested two more times in the following 46 years.

Overall, the organization said that 41 prisoners who were released as part of the 2011 exchange and arrested again in 2014 would be released again today.

They did not say what the prisoners had been sentenced for, and Israeli officials were not immediately available to comment.

The group will include 151 prisoners with "life sentences and high sentences," it said, as well as 24 women and children and 445 Palestinians who have been detained from Gaza since Oct. 7.

Hamas ‘ready’ for second phase of ceasefire

Freddie clayton

Hamas has announced its readiness for the second phase of the ceasefire agreement as the militant group as the final prisoner and hostage exchange of the first stage of the ceasefire began.

“We confirm our readiness to move to the second phase of the agreement, and our willingness to complete a comprehensive exchange process, which will achieve a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of the occupation,” Hamas said in a statement, warning Israel not to evade the agreement.

Negotiations over the second stage of the ceasefire deal, originally slated to begin Feb. 4, is intended to secure the release of the remaining 58 hostages and discuss the administration of post-war Gaza.

Talks were expected earlier this month, but were delayed and are now expected to begin in the coming days.

Sixth hostage Al-Sayed to be released separately, Hamas says

Freddie clayton

Hostage Hisham al-Sayed, who is set to be released today by Hamas after 11 years in captivity, will be handed over in Gaza without the ceremony of other the Israeli hostages, Hamas' military wing told NBc News.

Al-Sayed, a Palestinian Bedouin citizen of Israel, was kidnapped after crossing the border into Gaza in 2014.

The Supreme Steering committee for Negev Arabs in Israel issued a statement saying the decision by Hamas was a sign of respect for Palestinians living inside Israel, and serves as a message that they "are not part of the Israeli army."

According to Human Rights Watch, medical reports reveal that doctors had diagnosed al-Sayed with schizophrenia and personality disorder, and had him institutionalized many times.

In June 2022, Hamas released a video of Al-Sayed showing him lying on a cot with an oxygen mask and warning that he was ill.

Trump appears to back away from his plans to take over Gaza

Freddie clayton

President Donald Trump appeared to step back from his plans for the U.S. to take control of Gaza and displace the Palestinian population, after allies Egypt and Jordan bluntly rejected the plan.

During a telephone interview with Fox News radio, Trump said he was surprised that the two countries had not wanted to adopt his plan, despite the U.S. giving them "billions of dollars" a year, but said he was not going to force his idea on the region.

"I'll tell you, the way to do it is my plan. I think that’s the plan that really works. But I’m not forcing it. I’m just going to sit back and recommend it," he said.

The statement is a striking reversal from his widely condemned proposal to remove Palestinians from Gaza.

Trump also acknowledged the possibility of Hamas' continued presence in a post-war Gaza, saying that it could be difficult to remove the group entirely.

"The question is, can you wipe them all out?" he asked. "You know, they’re so interspersed among people, and it’s certainly not an easy thing to do."

Hamas says bodies of Israeli hostages mixed with Palestinians

After Israel accused Hamas of reneging on the deal over the body of Shiri Bibas, Basem Naim, a member of Hamas' political bureau, said in a statement yesterday that Israel's bombing of the Gaza Strip resulted in "corpses of Israeli prisoners mixing with corpses of Palestinians, thousands of whom are still under the rubble."

Naim further expressed frustration at the "double standards" regarding the treatment of Palestinian and Israeli dead, saying that Palestinians officals have received bodies from Israel "in blue bags without any identification on them and without any respect for their humanity."

"We did not hear any condemnation of these crimes from international officials and the official western media did not care about Palestinian human rights," he added.

Israel expected to free more than 600 Palestinian prisoners

The Palestinian Prisoners' Media Office said that as part of the hostage-prisoner exchange deal, about 600 Palestinian prisoners are expected to be released from Israeli prisons.

“Following the identification process at the Institute of Forensic Medicine, we received this morning the news we had dreaded — our Shiri was murdered in captivity and has now returned home to her sons, husband, sister, and all her family for rest,” the family said.
