
In the US, the average yearly cost of electricity is $1,568, or 2.1 percent of the national median income โ but affordability varies dramatically from state to state.
To find out where in America electricity bills are most and least affordable, the Home Energy Club used data from the Energy Information Administration to rank the US states based on the percentage of the median household income spent on electricity annually.
Households in Louisiana face the least affordable bills, spending almost 3.5 percent of their yearly median income on electricity. Mississippi and Alabama residents spend the second-most on electricity relative to income (3.4 percent).
The most affordable electricity bills are found in Utah, where just 1.09 percent of the median household income goes towards them. The state is also home to the lowest monthly costs overall, at $85, on average.
Hawaii's electricity bills are the highest in the country, costing an average of $213 a month.
