In 2021, fentanyl and other synthetic opioid overdoses became one of the leading causes of death among young Americans, according to analysis by USAFacts. In fact, the drug overdose crisis gripping the US claims almost 300 lives every single day.
Ahead of Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, Boca Recovery Center looked at CDC data to find out which US states were most affected by drug overdose fatalities between March 1, 2023, and February 28, 2024.
Over the year analyzed, West Virginia experienced the most per-capita drug overdose fatalities, with 75.2 deaths per 100,000 residents. Conversely, Nebraska and South Dakota saw the fewest overdose deaths per capita, with 8.2 and 9.3, respectively.
When it comes to daily drug overdose deaths, California (32.3), Florida (19.3) and Texas (15.4) topped the list. The lowest number of daily overdose fatalities were seen in South Dakota (0.2) and Wyoming (0.3).
