Book: The White Mosque by Sofia Samatar
A historical tapestry of border-crossing travelers, students, wanderers, martyrs and invaders, The White Mosque is a memoiristic, prismatic record of a journey through Uzbekistan and the strange shifts, encounters, and accidents that combine to create an identity. All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite: July 9, 2025 Season 6, Episode 41
Today's Dynamite + tomorrow's episode of Collision = lots of hours of AEW programming to send us to All In: Texas. Tonight's card is a little light on singles matches but big on chaotic energy: The Young Bucks and the D-Riders team up on Ospreay, Hangman and The Opps in two separate matches, four more women shoot for opening spots in the Casino Gauntlet, and boys have a "talky-talk" where girls have a "face-to-face". [more inside]
Book: Chlorine
Ren Yu is a swimmer. Her daily life starts and ends with the pool. Her teammates are her only friends. Her coach is her guiding light. If she swims well enough, she will be scouted, get a scholarship, go to a good school. Her parents will love her. Her coach will be kind to her. She will have a good life.
But these are human concerns. These are the concerns of those confined to land, those with legs. Ren grew up on stories of creatures of the deep, of the oceans and the rivers. Creatures that called sailors to their doom. That dragged them down and drowned them. That feasted on their flesh. The creature that she’s always longed to become: the mermaid.
Ren aches to be in the water. She dreams of the scent of chlorine, the feel of it on her skin. And she will do anything she can to make a life for herself where she can be free. No matter the pain. No matter what anyone else thinks. No matter how much blood she has to spill. [more inside]
Book: Our Wives Under the Sea

Whatever happened in that vessel, whatever it was they were supposed to be studying before they were stranded, Leah has carried part of it with her, onto dry land and into their home. As Miri searches for answers, desperate to understand what happened below the water, she must face the possibility that the woman she loves is slipping from her grasp.

Movie: I Married a Strange Person!
[TRAILER] Legendary animator Bill Plympton’s delirious and demented feature opens with two birds mating in midflight. The birdy love accidentally leads to a beam of misdirected TV satellite energy erupting a telekinetic boil on the neck of newlywed Grant, which causes havoc in his marriage to his darling wife Keri. From there, it's a nonstop stream of Plympton’s classic surreal non sequiturs and mind-bending visual puns involving Chia pets, fingernail dirt, assaults by bugs at the dinner table, riding mower antics and spontaneous eruptions of wonderfully deranged music (courtesy of frequent collaborator Maureen McElheron) with lyrics like "Would you love me if I blew up a deli / Got a big fat belly and became real smelly?" The mysteriously powerful boil on Grant’s neck eventually attracts the notice of the voracious Smilecorp, leading to an all-out battle for control of the wandering carbuncle. As Grant says mildly, "I'm really sorry about all that, but it's been a very weird day for me." [more inside]

That's okay, though, because he's not just so autistic he's nearly Rain Man, but because of [plot reasons] he's also basically John Wick. [more inside]

Special Event: Late Seating: A MIRACLE OF 34TH STREET
MST Club presents.... We usually show movies that are acknowledge, in general, to be bad. This is not one of those times. It's also a movie generally considered to be a Christmas movie, but we're showing it in July. (This is keeping with the original release, which was in June of 1947.) A weird man named Kris Kringle claims to be Santa Claus, and is committed to Bellevue mental hospital, and his case comes up in court. Is he really Santa? Actually no. Yet you can still tell it's a fantasy because everything comes up more or less positive by the end. But I am told that this one isn't a commentary, but definitely is a riff. Said riff was released around 2022.
