I don't celebrate Christmas so this is my key fuckaround time of the year. I've been binge watching Great British Sewing Bee ever since this question got posted and I am in so deep that I have tricked myself into believing I could sew my own clothes. So badly that I just bought a sewing machine 🤡
I'm a notorious quitter of hobbies that require attention and practice so I can already anticipate how this will go, but for now the delulu is flowing and spirits are high.
(Worst case I figure I'll hem and mend a few things I've already got and resell the machine.)

This has been a really low-key & low-drama holiday. It's so nice just hanging with family. I'm doing my best to appreciate it.

Usually a lurker, but man we had the nicest Christmas Eve! It's always been a night for the immediate family, we watch movies and make appetizers for dinner, and it's been that way since the kids were little. Every year has been great, but now the kids are older (older son and gf are sophomores at college and younger son is a junior in high school). I am delightedly surprised to learn how much more fun it is with adultish kids! Feeling pretty grateful tonight.

Cooking cooking cooking eating eating eating! Yesterday we did our traditional eat snacks (chips, crackers, Brie, smoked salmon, spinach dip, deviled eggs, veggies) and play Trivial Pursuit. Today we are making pork roll and mashed potatoes, green salad, bread stuffing with sausage and sage, melitzanasalata (eggplant/aubergine salad with red peppers, walnut, feta), cranberry sauce/dressing/condiment, we can't decide what to call it, carrot puffs, blueberry & strawberry trifle, and gingerbread cake. And drinks! Champagne (well, sparkling wine), and I'm going to try the primroses were over's Bees Knees cocktail. And maybe one of my brandy amaretto sours. Right now, espresso! I make it myself with a little lemon twist, right back there ... it's good, you should try it! And likely more Trivial Pursuit and perhaps a holiday movie.
Happy festivities, Everyone!

My whole damn family had some shit luck this year.
* I got a job in January but they laid me off in May. Then I got another job in August that sucked so bad and the boss was so toxic I quit two weeks ago. (I lost 20 pounds in a month JUST FROM STRESS.) I don't have another job lined up, so that's a BIT nerve-inducing, but I have 3 recruiters lined up ready to get to work come January, so I'm treating this as downtime in which I can get some SERIOUSLY needed rest - especially since my roommate is out of the country until January 2nd. I have been sleeping, binge-watching total crap on TV, and doing the occasional free festive outing.
* My brother's family got clobbered this year - particular in December, with both my niece and sister-in-law facing big health issues. They announced that while they're fine hosting people this year, it is going to be VERY casual and they will be doing takeout pizza for the meal. My parents are in a similar state. I'm flying there today - that's an unexpected GOOD thing, the fact that Cape Cod Air extended its flight schedule from New York (it used to just be a summer thing). Previously I'd have to take a train to Boston and my parents would have to drive an hour to fetch me - but the flight is only an hour long and my parents live ten minutes from the Hyannis airport. And - there's a particlarly good Chinese restaurant nearby. So I'll be joining my parents this afternoon for dim sum on Cape Cod, and then meeting up with my brother's family for pizza in a couple days.

Happy holidays! Due to family matters, my spouse left this morning for a few days. I'll be going over to my dad's in a few hours. We're going to make a ham sheet pan dinner, for which ChatGPT got me the recipe. I have a good chunk of time off. I have been using some of it for classic movies, such as "Gimme Shelter". I'm not much of a cook, but I did make gingerbread cookies from a mix. There was a problem with one of my gift orders, so it will arrive in January after all.

A very early film to feature wind turbines! Can I ask the significance?
I've walked three miles along the cliffs to in some way mitigate the very lardy rest of the day I will be having. Matchmakers are open, turkey is in the oven, pudding is in the pot, champagne is chilling ahead of 3pm, carols are playing. Nigella for starters, Delia for the turkey. Dinner 1 hour away (ish).

That reminds me that about ten years ago my SO got a sewing machine for Xmas. The idea was she would teach herself to sew, especially the while recovering from surgery. She made one cushion and the machine has languished in the home office since.
The cat does love that cushion though.

Neither the spouse nor I have good xmas memories historically and we're both grinches on the mass commercialism that is the holiday in modern society so we celebrated today by going for a birdwatching walk along a river and later playing cribbage while consuming snacks/glögg and listening to the Xmas in Frisko station on somafm.com (The listening of which is probably the only thing you could call a tradition with us.). We also do neither presents or decorating.

Gary was released from the hospital today and there was already staff at his house so I went home to the shelter. Almost everybody is gone on pass so I am going to scrub out the big tub and get in it. The hot water heater is huge and I am going to soak for a while.
When I Ubered back here, my driver was telling me all about Franklin Graham and how much he's doing for flood victims. She said she only trusts Newsmax. She said she'd pray for me and told me I should call a Graham-run organization for help. I think I will pass. I'm definitely in the bible belt.

We ended this even by playing a Shakespeare-themed board game which was quite enjoyable. Shakespeare knowledge is optional (there are cards you can choose to play where you have to know Shakespeare facts, but they are not essential to game play). The rules were a bit hard to get our heads around, but fortunately niece went through the booklet and told us what to do. It meant everyone was engaged and off their mobiles for a few hours.

Well, I got offered my dream job at a local LGBT nonprofit on Christmas Eve, so that's definitely been a highlight! I'm no contact with my family, but on year two it stings a lot less. Plus we got to hang out at my in-laws (vastly better people) all day instead of juggling two Christmases. I finished all of my crafted gifts on time, which is always a big win, and one of the gifts I received is a museum membership that's going to get loads of use!

I cannot remember the last time the Man and the Child and I had a Christmas without people coming over, or being somewhere that wasn't Home. But this year - we spent all day in our pajamas at home by ourselves. The Child opened presents leisurely, we watched a movie, I made gingerbread cookies, we had ham. It was pretty nice, which is saying something, because I'm a confirmed Grinch.
Did I mention we spent all day in our pajamas? So peaceful. A great Introvert Christmas.

I was offline for four whole days except a small amount of email checking in case of disaster. Was not bad. This was a busy holiday season with a group dinner, a Solstice Bonfire in 5°F weather, a surprise shift at the library, a tacos/tequila Xmas eve and a scalloped potatoes and woodstove hang out on Xmas day. Five days of eating meals outside the house, probably a first for the whole year! I lit my first ever menorah that wasn't something I'd assembled out of random stuff around the house (test tubes, oranges, whatever) yesterday which was nifty. Now I'm off to work at the library and fix people's holidaytime technology gifts.
One of my longtime drop-in-time elderly ladies passed away on Monday. I'd been to see her a few times at the hospital after she'd fallen on the ice a few days before. Her kids are coming from out of town and her church folks have been very supportive of her and the family. I miss her and I will miss all her wild questions about her fairly-impressive technology arsenal.

Walked for six miles along the North Cornwall cliffs. There's a weird sea mist here at the moment which made some parts of the walk feel very isolated. Where the cliffs become vertiginous there was a headland like an enormous burial mound, with a single trampled footpath leading to it through the fog. There was no-one else around and it felt lost in time. A mile south we wondered when we would reach the lighthouse only to realise it was in front of us and it's white paint meant it merged into its surroundings, with only two black windows giving it away. We ended up at a golf club with Xmas stout and the Chelsea game.

I went to this place once like 16 or 17 years ago with a college roommate and quietly stood in a corner while she got what she needed, so I had no idea how overwhelming this place is. Just remember, if you hear a crow caw while you're out doing a walk like that (foreboding landforms! Fog! Cornwall!), then a murder has just happened and you should probably report it to the coppers.
...I mean, unless Midsomer Murders and the rest have sent me astray, which I have on good authority is not the case, so listen for the crows and take care to watch your back near the cliff edges. Oh, and also if the wind picks up when the crow is cawing, that's an extra-bad sign and you probably need to get on the phone to emergency services before someone smacks you with a bit of tree. If an inquisitive old lady is about, then hang around her because she's got incredible Plot Armor, but maybe don't drink her tea if she offers any just in case she's one of the bad ones.

I survived the chaos that was Family Christmas and - because several people cancelled at the last minute due to health fuckery - we were massively overcatered so I don't want to look at turkey or duck or salmon or asparagus for a fair old while, that's for sure. It's been nice and quiet here - mostly because the temperatures have been brutal - was in the low 40's yesterday (Celcius). On the cooler days I baked a couple of loaves of sourdough and managed to burn my inner forearm on the oven door, which has been less than fun. Made a banana cake today with three bananas that were so ripe I squeezed them into the batter like toothpaste. Currently pining for winter and considering moving to Tasmania as a climate refugee.

I'm on pins and needles to see how this windy vertiginous crow caw bluff misadventure turns out. I've slapped the PC and chatted up the joking coroner, so I should be okay, right? *sips old lady's tea*

Sitting in the Hyannis airport now waiting for my flight back to JFK. I am most likely going to do this for visits home from now on - my parents live only 15 minutes from the airport, and the price is similar to what I would have done on a train like I used to; but the train took longer and meant a 90 minute drive each way for my parents to fetch me.
Plus my cousin told me last night that he knows one of the pilots and can help me get the occasional free ticket.
The only slight tension is that the Cape Air fleet is all 10-seat Cessnas, so it's a little scary taxiing to the runway in one of those things past the huge jets. I get a great seat, but still.

We ran from the village of the crows. There were eight of them on the telegraph pole when we stepped through the front door but we made it to the car and away. Our only refuge though may bring its own dangers.

As a Muslim, I don't mark the Christian holidays at all, and the Gregorian New Year coming in is simply a marker of the end of the fiscal year for me. IRA distribution time!
That being said, tonight I'm hoping to chat with a cousin who lives in the US, God willing, much as our parents would have made it a point to do around this time of year.
And I'm glad the daylight hours are slowly but surely getting longer already, although we have at least another week of sunrises occurring later in the day!

My spouse is slowly recovering from the flu (finally fever-free but still exhausted) that our kid picked up during his final exams (luckily he finished his last final before he got sick). Somehow I've avoided it so far. I documented my Christmas dinner travails on the free thread (TLDR: the lamb I was going to make was rancid, so we had frozen appetizers instead). Because of the illnesses, we still haven't made latkes for Hanukkah, but perhaps tonight. Hopefully we'll all be better by New Year's Eve, so that we can spend time with our friends as has been the tradition for the last 30(!) years.
Overall, a weird holiday season, made weirder by the fact that I have had much more work than normal. I teach for an online university, and our classes (mostly 8 weeks long) start every month, so I'm always teaching except for the one month I don't have classes. It's not as bad as it sounds given the structure of our classes, but for some reason I have more students right now than I've ever had before. I get extra money for teaching students in excess of my yearly obligation, which is nice, but surely they could have been spread out over the year instead of crammed into the last two months.

Every time they get groomed they get a seasonal kerchief and they look so dapper, but it scares me to leave them unattended wearing one because of the strangle potential. But now that I can mod the things to go around their collars, the boys can be dapper 24/7. Everyone wins.

....So, last night while Dad and I watched the news, I noticed their local news broadcast began with three different stories of airplane mayhem: severe turbulence hitting an Alaska Air flight, a stowaway on a Delta flight, the Azerbaijani flight that got shot down, etc. I joked to Dad that this was giving me a bad feeling about my flight back to New York today.
Well: the flight itself was fine, once we got into the air. However.
* The flight was delayed two hours because the Cape Air fleet consists entirely of Cessna 10-seater planes, and so when there's low visibility at your destination airport, they take that super-seriously.
* When we finally did get to JFK, we did land okay - but then had to sit on the tarmac and wait another 15 minutes because there were already two planes parked in both of the only two spots they allot to Cape Air at JFK, and we had to wait for one of them to take off so we could get into that spot.
And then there was more mayhem on the ground:
* There's ongoing construction at JFK, and so for me to get to the taxi stand I had to climb up one set of stairs, walk to a different terminal entirely, and then go down three more flights in a parking garage to find the taxi dispatch.
* I found the taxi okay, but traffic on the highway was so bad it took the taxi an additional 30 minutes to get me home ON TOP OF the 40 minutes it usually takes.
....And then there were the communications issues waiting for me:
* My cell phone mic has inexplicably stopped working, so when I called my parents to let them know I'd arrived safely my father was repeatedly saying "Hello? Is anyone there?" while I was all but screaming "I FINALLY GOT HOME" at him.
* My VOIP phone was saying I had a voicemail, but when I checked it the only thing there was a rerun of a Thanksgiving message from Mom. I couldn't get the "check voicemail" light to turn off.
So, the plane was okay, but I think things surrounding it definitely WERE cursed.

Spent most of the weekend deep cleaning my room. I sorted, filed, and/or shredded about two and a half years of procrastinated paperwork (I know this because the earliest dates on the paperwork were around mid-2022, which was the last time I Caught Up On The Paperwork). Cleaned out my dresser. Cleaned out my closet. Sorted through the clothes which had been hanging in the closet, discarding what needs to go, and throwing the keepers into the laundry pile because they'd mostly been there long enough to get dusty.
I also sanitized a musty bathroom sink (probably because I had washed some kitten food down it a few months ago when I was fostering kittens), and the musty washing machine, which had been growing slowly more nasty lately. Turns out there's these concentrated bleach packet thingies exactly for the purpose of sanitizing one's washer! This is, obviously, coming in handy for all the laundry I'm doing.

We spent Christmas in the South with my family this year. It was a good time but wow, my sister's lifestyle is so different than ours! By that I mean, they live in suburbia where there are no sidewalks and everything requires a car. The TV is on all day with reruns of Modern Family, ER, and Friends. And they don't really cook so Christmas dinner was a purchased honey-baked ham with sides from the Ham Place. (It's not called the Ham Place. I have decided to call it the Ham Place.) Shepherd and I made a Field Roast veggie roast and a Brooklyn Blackout Cake.
The only sad note of the year is that we could not convince my mom to leave her apartment to celebrate. Her Alzheimer's has accelerated and it broke my heart when we stopped by before we flew back to Ontario to say goodbye, and then a few hours later she thought we were still in town.

From there, a brief stop to pick up two pies, one pumpkin and the other bourbon chocolate walnut, then back to Whole Foods to get one Amazon delivery that actually made in under the wire, whoot!
Now I'm just sorting some gifts while settling down to watch Six Triple Eight on Netflix. Christmas dinner will be lamb chops, mashed taters, and bacon wrapped asparagus
Hope y'all have had a good day!
