
From rent to the rising cost of goods, it's no secret that life can be more expensive for single people. But did you know that in 61 cities across the US, singles need to make as many as six figures to live comfortably?
GOBankingRates calculated the cost of living for single residents in the country's 100 biggest cities, then applied the the 50/30/20 budgeting rule β which states that necessities should use up no more than 50 percent of your income β to find out where single people need the highest salaries to afford a comfortable lifestyle.
Of the 61 US cities where singletons need to earn six figures, Irvine, California, tops the list, with life in the city costing the average single person $291,586.
The second, third and fourth-priciest cities for single people are also in California: Fremont ($277,753), San Jose ($262,265) and San Francisco ($262,265).
Singles in San Francisco need roughly $75,000 more than their New York counterparts to live comfortably. Compared to San Franciscans, people living alone in the Big Apple require a salary of just $165,655 to meet the 50/30/20 rule.
The average salary needed to live comfortably as a single person in Miami is $134,000, more than double the city's median household income of $59,000.
