Troubling thoughts keep all of us up at night every once in a while. But, how can one tell if they're onto something or just creating a rabbit hole for themselves?

Thankfully, the commonality of our fears means that somebody else has already looked into it.

Redditor u/Puffsheep took the first leap and signaled the beacon, and now we can all sleep a bit better at night โ€” hopefully.

What do people not realize has an extremely low chance of happening?

  1. One such panic not mentioned, but still worth noting:

Fear of contracting "schizophrenic germs," clearly nothing more than a paranoia-driven scaremongering tactic which I recall being subjected to while in a Day Treatment programme in Eau Claire, WI after high-school graduation in 1980. Perhaps such may have been deployed to excuse repeated funding cuts, or threats therefor, yet the claim was that said "schizophrenic germs" could cause one to contract schizophrenia as easily as influenza or the common cold. (I have since learned, however, that the mental health community is in disagreement as to the root causes and triggers of schizophrenia, but it should be noted that I was in an abusive foster-care home prior to graduation from high school, which may be a contributing factor.)

"Waking up during major surgery won't happen"
0.2-0.5% is low, but not "won't happen", especially when you consider that tens of millions of procedures requiring general anesthesia occur every year. The odds of it happening are higher than many of the other things listed here.
