'til death duo part'
The Duolingo Owl Is Dead, And More Of This Week's 'One Main Character'

Every day, somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on X from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.
Each day on twitter there is one main character. The goal is to never be it

This week, we've got an angry Norwegian, a cheeky snack company and reactions to the death of Duolingo's beloved mascot.
Thursday
HΓ₯kon Stokke
The character: HΓ₯kon Stokke, Norwegian TikToker, fed-up shopper, McDonald's loyalist, concerned citizen
The plot: Stokke is a young Norwegian creator whose inflammatory vibe is something everyone can relate to. While less than one percent of the global population speaks Norwegian, Stokke's rant β about blueberries being expensive, even when on sale, and his chiding of health influencers for shaming the fast food ("McFlurry, Big Mac, fries and soda") that gets him more bang for his buck than those blueberries β was something everyone could appreciate.
donβt speak norwegian but i fully understood every word he said pic.twitter.com/B8cIs9LynM

The repercussion: Most of the attention Stokke's video received was directed at him, rather than the actual problem he was yelling about. It might have been the first time many netizens came across a Norwegian influencer, so that's what a lot of the focus was on.
Iβve never heard a norwegian yell until now

The label Β«stingyΒ» is often thrown around, but I believe frugal is the better description for MΓΈringar.

MoonPie
The character: MoonPie, independent thinker, sovereign snack
The plot: One of the first things President Donald Trump did after returning to the White House was rename the part of the Atlantic Ocean basin known as the Gulf of Mexico to... the Gulf of America.
In response, the Tennessee-based snack MoonPie also decided to issue its own executive order and rename Florida.
"'But Florida is a state," you say. No, Florida was a state. Now it's MoonPie Town. We can just do this now!" the company's X account wrote.

The repercussion: You know the internet isn't a lost cause just yet when there's a non-conglomerate, small-town snack company poking fun at an incompetent president, while big brands are busy doling out automated replies. It's safe to say that the people were entertained by MoonPie's handlers.
Idk feels like they could use an actual MoonPie

Tuesday
Duolingo
The character: Duolingo, mascot-less, bereaved language-learning app
The plot: On Tuesday, Duolingo posted a tweet announcing that its iconic mascot, Duo the Owl, had died.
βIt is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mascot, Duo the Owl,β the statement read. "For years, he tirelessly reminded millions to do their language lessons β sometimes with gentle nudges, sometimes with sheer, unhinged persistence. But even the most relentless of birds can only take so much."
βTbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know."

β Duolingo (@duolingo) February 11, 2025
The Duolingo X account has since shared a (definitely real) video of Duo being hit by a cybertruck, and also suggested users could bring Duo back by doing their lessons. Smells fishy.
The repercussion: The internet was shocked by Duoβs untimely passing, and thousands β including celebrities, brands and even the World Health Organization β took to X to pay their respects.
