A police officer was shot and killed in the emergency room of a hospital near Raleigh, North Carolina, on Saturday, according to authorities.

WakeMed campus police officer Roger Smith was shot and killed while on duty at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex in Garner at 9 a.m. after a “struggle,” WakeMed Health & Hospitals said in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are now with the Smith family as they come to learn of this tragic event,” the health group said. “We give an enormous amount of gratitude to the Garner Healthplex Emergency Department staff for their heroic and quick response to this incident.”

It is unclear if any arrests were made, or if there is a suspect in the incident.

The Garner Police Department did not immediately return a request for comment.

WakeMed said that its leadership was on site at the hospital, located about 5 miles south of Raleigh, and is working with state and local authorities.

The health group added that the emergency room lobby remains inaccessible at this time.
