The bombs were functional and had the capabilities to explode, according to a plea agreement. The inmate admitted mailing them "in retaliation for prison conditions," the agreement said.
"No amount of money could ever restore the 38 years of my life that were stolen from me," Maurice Hastings, 72, said in a statement. "But this settlement is a welcome end to a very long road."
Oscar Guevara, who has undergone surgery for a brain tumor, said his father, Mario Guevara, who has been in detention over 100 days, was one of his main caregivers.
"She lived 11 of her 14 years with a relentless cancer, yet lived more fully and gratefully than most," her family said of her acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis.
Students at West Florence High School also had to seek medical attention for respiratory issues due to the spray "designed to imitate fecal odor," the sheriff's office said.
