Live updates: Israel claims aerial superiority over Tehran as Iran launches more missiles

President Donald Trump and other Group of Seven leaders are gathering in Canada for a summit where the conflict will be high on the agenda.

What we know

  • ESCALATING CONFLICT: Israel and Iran have begun a new round of attacks as the conflict between the two heavily armed rivals enters its fourth day.
  • MOUNTING DEATH TOLL: At least 224 people have been killed since Israel began bombing Iran on Friday, Iranian state media reported, while Iranian retaliatory strikes have killed at least 24 people in Israel.
  • SENIOR IRANIANS KILLED: Israeli airstrikes have wiped out much of supreme leader Ali Khamenei’s inner circle.
  • ISRAELI WARNING: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz accused Tehran of targeting Israeli civilians and said that “residents of Iran will pay the price.”
  • IRANIAN EXECUTION: Iran has executed a man convicted of spying for Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency reported.

Airports are closed across the Mideast, stranding tens of thousands

The Associated Press

“The domino effect here is massive,” said retired pilot and aviation safety expert John Cox, who said the disruptions will have a huge price tag.

“You’ve got thousands of passengers suddenly that are not where they’re supposed to be, crews that are not where they are supposed to be, airplanes that are not where they’re supposed to be,” he told the AP.

Iran’s airspace is completely closed, and Israel has closed its main international Ben Gurion Airport “until further notice.”

Although airspace is still partly open in Lebanon and Jordan, the situation is chaotic at airports there. Neighboring Iraq’s airports have all closed because of its closeness to Iran. Some Iraqis stranded there have opted to leave by land.

Trump asks National Security Council to be in Situation Room when he gets back to White House

Yamiche Alcindor and Kristen Welker

Trump has asked the National Security Council to be prepared in the Situation Room when he returns from the G7 summit, a U.S. official told NBC News.

Trump is cutting short his attendance at the Group of Seven summit in Canada because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the White House said this evening.

White House says Trump leaving G7 meeting in Canada to focus on Middle East

Trump plans to leave the G7 summit in western Canada early to return to Washington and focus on the situation in the Middle East, the White House said tonight.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that Trump was returning "so he can attend to many important matters."

"President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer," she posted on social media. "Much was accomplished, but because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State."

Earlier this evening, Trump on social media urged the estimated 10 million residents of Tehran to "immediately evacuate," though he did not provide further details.

Trump tells Tehran's estimated 10 million residents to leave 'immediately'

Dennis Romero and Raquel Coronell Uribe

Criticizing Iran's leadership for failing to quickly agree to limitations on its nuclear ambitions, Trump today urged Tehran residents to "immediately evacuate."

“What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

It would likely be logistically complicated for Tehran, a city of nearly 10 million people, to evacuate. Since Israel’s strikes on the country began, airports in Iran and across the Middle East have been closed, and many roads have been blocked.

Trump opposed — and then reluctantly supported — Israel’s military action against Iran. The White House said earlier today that Trump will not sign any potential G7 statement calling for de-escalation.

Iranian and U.S. delegations wrapped up a round of talks in Rome last month over Iran's nuclear ambitions and the uranium enrichment that could ultimately fuel them.

At the time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there was potential for progress, and the two sides have continued to spar this month over the future of the uranium enrichment.

The United States is supporting Israel by sending a second aircraft carrier to the region, as well as warships with ballistic missile defense capabilities.

TV employee killed in strike, Iran state media in reports

A government TV employee was killed in a strike on a building used by Iran's national broadcasting service, according to the Fars News Agency, a state-run news outlet run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The attack hit a building in Tehran used by the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, according to video of the explosive strike.

The victim was identified as Masoumeh Azimi, an employee of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, a state-run broadcasting unit that owns and operates multiple national and regional television and radio stations, including the news network.

Before the news of the death, Iran state media reported that least 224 people have been killed since Israel began bombing Iran on Friday. Iranian retaliatory strikes have killed at least 24 people in Israel, Netanyahu's office said.

2,775 people evacuated, 14,583 damage claims amid Iran attacks, Israeli official says

Israel’s finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, said thousands of residents have been evacuated in response to Iran's strikes.

"Our teams have handled, as of Saturday, 14,583 claims for direct damage from the attacks from Iran," Smotrich said in a release today. "We are assisting 2,775 residents who were evacuated from their homes, most of whom were accommodated in hotels through the local authorities in a model we determined in advance."

"So far, we have identified 24 structures, buildings that are designated for demolition," he added.

Iranian and Israeli phones appear to be getting fake emergency messages

As Iran and Israel exchange missile fire, people in both countries have been receiving fake emergency messages on their phones.

Some Iranians have received calls from Iraqi numbers with a recorded message instructing them to stock up on essential goods, said Amir Rashidi, an Iran researcher at the Miaan Group, a nonprofit organization that advocates for human rights in Iran. Rashidi obtained a recording of the call and translated it and shared it with NBC News.

Israel’s National Cyber Directorate issued a warning today about a text message campaign that claimed fuel shortages and discouraged Israelis from seeking shelter.

U.S. sending another aircraft carrier, more warships to Middle East, officials say

Courtney Kube and Gordon Lubold

The Pentagon is expediting the deployment of an additional aircraft carrier and other ships to the Middle East as the conflict deepens, according to two U.S. officials.

The USS Nimitz and its attending ships, now in Asia, are being sent to the Middle East “without delay,” according to a U.S. official. The Nimitz and the strike group’s other ships will join the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group, which is on its seventh month of deployment in the region. The Nimitz should arrive in the region in the next week or so, the official said.

The move means the United States is expected to have two carrier strike groups in the Middle East for at least the next month or more, until the Vinson returns home this summer, the U.S. official said.

The Nimitz was already scheduled to head to the Middle East, before the conflict broke out. But Navy officials canceled a scheduled port call in Vietnam to get the Nimitz and its ships to the Middle East slightly faster, the official said.

Separately, other ships, including Navy destroyers, are also headed to the region, the U.S. official said. Those ships, now based in U.S. European Command, have ballistic missile defense capabilities that are being used to defend Israel and U.S. assets in the region. They will join others already off Israel.

“In coming days, you’ll see more ships with ballistic missile defense capabilities join them,” the U.S. official said.

Trump won't sign G7 statements urging Israel-Iran de-escalation, official says

A White House official told NBC News that Trump will not sign any potential G7 joint statement urging a de-escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran.

“Under the strong leadership of President Trump, the United States is back to leading the effort to restore peace around the world. President Trump will continue to work towards ensuring Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon,” the White House official said.

The potential of a draft statement was first reported by CBS News.

Netanyahu signaled a news briefing today that he is not interested in a ceasefire.

Netanyahu reiterated that Israel's goal in starting the escalation Friday is to eliminate Iran's nuclear program, its ballistic missile production and "the terror axis."

"First of all, we are interested in achieving the result I mentioned — the elimination of the three threats I outlined," he said when he was asked about a ceasefire. "We are not backing down from that, and the people of Israel will not settle for less."

Netanyahu did not rule out regime change or assassinating Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"We will do whatever is necessary," he said.

Iran's targets include key Israeli military hubs

Iran's targets include key Israeli military hubs, according to the Iranian Student News Network, a semi-official state news agency.

The sites, which include the Ramat David air base, are known as the main hubs behind attacks on Iran, according to the outlet.

Attacks on the hubs are "expected in the coming hours," it said.

Iran asks regional powers to urge Trump to press Israel for ceasefire

Natasha Lebedeva

In the past three days, Iran reportedly asked several nations to persuade Trump to press Israel for an immediate ceasefire, a Middle East diplomat with knowledge of the situation told NBC News.

Iran has reached out to urge Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Turkey and a few European countries to speak with Trump, the diplomat said. In exchange for the ceasefire, Iran would offer flexibility on nuclear talks.

IDF says it's concentrating on attacking launch sites and stopping drones

Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Effie Defrin said forces are focusing on attacking launch sites in Iran and thwarting unmanned aerial vehicle launches.

The IDF said it struck two Iranian F-14 fighter jets at "an airport in Tehran." The military said the jets were preparing to launch unmanned aerial vehicles at Israel and intercept Israeli air force aircraft.

Defrin also spoke about the IDF's attack on a studio belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, which the military believes was used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. NBC News has not been able to verify the claim.

"The center’s operations were carried out under the direction and orders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which for years has called for the destruction of the State of Israel and genocide," Defrin said.

'Single phone call from Washington' could stop Israel, Iranian official says

Mirna Alsharif

Ellie Khademi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said it would take one call from Trump to Netanyahu to get Israel to "end its aggression" and bring about a return to diplomacy.

"Without a complete halt to military aggression against us, our responses will continue," Araghchi said in a statement on Telegram. "A single phone call from Washington is enough to silence someone like Netanyahu. That could pave the way back to diplomacy."

Araghchi reiterated that Iran did not start the conflict and said it that "has no interest in further bloodshed" but that it "will proudly fight to the last drop of blood to defend our land, our people, our dignity, and our achievements."

He also accused Netanyahu of attacking Iran to sabotage a potential nuclear deal between Iran and the United States.

"He wants, once again, to completely mislead the American president and, more importantly, the American taxpayers," Araghchi said.

A video showed what appeared to be the moment a missile hit the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network's studio in Tehran.

Crashing sounds are first heard earlier on in the video as the anchor continues speaking in front of the network's large news screen. At one point, the anchor and people behind the camera say, "God is great," indicating the distressing situation.

"The noble people of Iran, be aware, what you saw, the sound you heard, was the sound of the intrusion to our land," the anchor said.

Seconds later, the anchor is interrupted by a much louder crashing sound as the screen behind her goes black. Debris and smoke can be seen as the anchor quickly leaves the studio.

Someone off camera yells, "God is great."

In a statement, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the studio was attacked by the IDF, calling it a "propaganda and incitement broadcasting authority" for the Iranian government.

"We will strike the Iranian dictator everywhere," he said.

The IDF said it targeted the "communication center," claiming it was "being used for military purposes by the Iranian Armed Forces."

NBC News has not been able to verify the IDF's claim.

"Upon receiving an alert, the public is instructed to enter a protected space and remain there until further notice," the statement warned.

‘For the U.S. to refrain from direct intervention is not enough,’ senior diplomat says

Ian Sherwood

A senior Middle East diplomat with knowledge of previous diplomatic talks with Iran told NBC News that the U.S. must get more involved in stopping the current conflict.

“For the U.S. to refrain from direct intervention is not enough,” the diplomat said. “They must also prevail upon the Israelis to desist for a return to negotiations to be possible.”

Israel attacked hospital in western Iran, Iranian official says

NBC News

Israel launched an attack on Farabi Hospital in Kermanshah province, western Iran, today, according to Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani, per the Islamic Republic News Agency.

Mohajerani said dozens of Iranians have been killed by Israeli attacks, and at least 75 women and children were injured, adding that this disproves its claim that it is only targeting military headquarters.

IAEA 'will not stand idly' through Israel and Iran conflict, official says

Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said the organization "will not stand idly" as Israel and Iran exchange fire that compromises nuclear safety.

This is the second time in three years that two IAEA member states engaged in conflict where nuclear installations are coming under fire, Grossi said in remarks today. The first time being the war between Russia and Ukraine.

"We can and will act within our statutory mandate to assist in preventing a nuclear accident that could result in unpredictable radiological consequences," Grossi said.

Netanyahu says conflict could lead to regime change in Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested regime change in Iran could be a possible outcome of Israel's military attacks on the country.

Netanyahu made the comments during an interview with Fox News aired yesterday, saying Israel would do whatever was necessary to remove the "existential threat" posed by Iran.

His comments came after reports emerged that Trump had blocked an Israeli proposal to assassinate Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with a U.S. official also telling NBC News of the development.

In his interview with Fox News, Netanyahu did not directly refute an initial report from news agency Reuters about the proposed assassination attempt but he dismissed “false reports” about discussions between the U.S. and Israel.

Israeli strikes devastate Iran’s military and scientific leadership

While President Donald Trump may have vetoed a proposal from Israel to assassinate Iran’s supreme leader, according to a U.S. official, Israeli strikes over the past four days have effectively decapitated Tehran’s military leadership and devastated its community of nuclear scientists.

Iran’s top military official, Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, was among the first to be killed in Israeli strikes, with both Iranian state media and the Israeli military reporting his death last week.

Gen. Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, and Maj. Gen. Gholam Ali Rashid, a top official in the Guard, were also among those killed, along with with a string of other military and intelligence leaders, according to state media, including Gen. Mohammad Kazemi, the force's head of intelligence.

Iran's scientific community has also been hit by Israel’s strikes. The Israeli military said it has killed at least nine scientists in Iran, including top nuclear scientist Mohammad-Mehdi Tehranchi, whose death was separately confirmed by the Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran.

The Israeli military says it has achieved "full aerial superiority" over Tehran, with a spokesperson comparing its capabilities to those seen in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and the occupied West Bank.

Israeli forces yesterday completed a fresh wave of strikes in Tehran, targeting more than 20 military "command centers" and the Quds Force, the overseas arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, IDF spokesman Effie Defrin said in a briefing today.

Israel also says it has destroyed a third of Israel’s missile launchers, about 50 military aircraft and more than 20 surface-to-surface missiles.

Senator introduces bill to prevent Trump from attacking Iran without congressional approval

Sen. Tim Kaine has introduced legislation to stop Trump from using military force against Iran without congressional approval.

“It is not in our national security interest to get into a war with Iran unless that war is absolutely necessary to defend the United States," the senior Democrat from Virginia said in a statement today.

The resolution will ensure that "if we decide to place our nation’s men and women in uniform into harm’s way, we will have a debate and vote on it in Congress,” said Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees.

Kaine has previously tried to claw back from the White House Congress' authority to declare war. He introduced a similar legislation in 2020 during Trump's first term, also seeking to prevent U.S. from attacking Iran.

Israel does not want to harm civilians, defense minister says

Israel’s defense minister is now walking back his previous comment, saying it was “obvious” when he wrote that “the residents of Tehran would pay the price and soon” he didn’t mean Israel would “physically harm” them.

He meant they would be “forced to pay the price of the dictatorship.”

How Trump went from opposing Israel’s strikes on Iran to reluctant support

Reporting from Washington

President Donald Trump had opposed Israeli military action against Iran, favoring negotiations over bombing. But in the days before the strikes began, he became convinced that Israel’s heightened anxiety over Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities was warranted.

After a pivotal briefing from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, on Israel’s plans and U.S. options for supporting its operation, he gave tacit approval to Israel to have at it and decided to provide limited U.S. backing.

The Quds Force oversees ties with Iran-backed militias in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and the Palestinian territories.

Iran has not commented on the strikes. While Quds Force positions in Syria had been targeted multiple times, this would mark the first time their command centers and bases have been struck inside Tehran.
