This Is Actually How International Tariffs Work
This election cycle Americans voting will be hearing a lot about tariffs being imposed on foreign nations, like China. Here's a simple explanation of how that works, and who ends up paying the price.

This needs to be much more widely understood. Current policy discussions don't really cover it well enough. China does not pay tariffs - Americans do.
Tariffs punish other countries by making their good more expensive for Americans to purchase, making domestic products more competitive, but it's done by charging American consumers more for those imported products. Regardless of whether a consumer buys imported or domestic products, it will cost more than before tariffs were introduced.
China does not pay the tariff. The only cost they incur is possible loss of revenue due to reduced sales of their exports to the U.S., and that assumes U.S. consumers have viable choices in products.
