According to Forbes, the US ranks third when it comes to the world's biggest wine lovers. Nationwide, the wine consumption rate stands at 0.42 gallons per capita (or just more than 16 bottles when it comes to ethanol consumption), but that number can be a lot higher or lower depending on where in the country you look. Usually, a 750 ml bottle with 12.9 percent ABV has 0.0256 gallons of ethanol.
Using the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's data from 2022, Visual Capitalist mapped the annual per-capita ethanol consumption of wine in gallons in each US state. The figures only include residents aged 14 or older.
People in the District of Columbia are the biggest wine drinkers overall, with an annual consumption rate of 1.05 gallons. New Hampshire takes second place (0.8 gallons), while Vermont is in third (0.72 gallons).
West Virginia drinks the least wine, with just 0.11 gallons of ethanol consumed via wine per capita, followed by Kansas (0.15 gallons) and Utah (0.17 gallons).
