If you saw our recent post on the most affordable big cities in the Us, you'll know that Detroit, Michigan, tops the list โ but which cities are at the other end of the scale?
Using data from Doxo, Visual Capitalist ranked the least affordable of America's 50 largest cities, based on average monthly household spending. The study analyzed expenditure on 10 common bills, including cable and internet, health insurance and rent.
Of the cities where residents face the highest costs, five belong to California โ including top-ranking san Jose, whose households spend an average of $3,695 covering their bills every month.
If we zoom out, however, and look at the share of monthly household income spent in each location, we see that some coastal cities are more affordable than their Midwest counterparts. Households in Miami, for example, might only spend $2,867 on bills per month, but that amounts to almost half of their earnings.
