On the night of October 10, 2024, a geomagnetic storm brought the aurora borealis much further south than it normally sits.
Folks as far down as Florida reported being able to see a natural light show in the sky, so we went around social media to pick out the best examples of the northern lights here in the US. Heck, we even went out into the wild late last night to take a picture of our own.
Aurora borealis around the United States
Another stunning #aurora timelapse, this time from Temperance, #Michigan.

This evening, for the second time this year, the #northernlights made a rare appearance in Key Largo, Florida. It's uncommon to see the aurora this far south. These photos were captured at Latitude 25°6′24″N#Auroraborealis pic.twitter.com/nd5w1wADpR

AURORA TIMELAPSE over Bug Light. Towards the end you can see a huge cruise ship, the Celebrity Eclipse, leaving Portland. They're going to have an incredible night at sea. #aurora #auroraborealis #northernlights @CelebrityCruise pic.twitter.com/yvk7pktPKF

Far from the most spectacular photos on here tonight, but the view from Northern Virginia. I wasn't convinced I was seeing anything, until I checked the short video. #northernlights pic.twitter.com/5riHuxB7u1

When I saw the auroral corona appearing overhead, I knew exactly where I wanted to run to capture it, to the base of the lighthouse so I could have it pointing right into it. #Maine #NorthernLights #Auroraborealis pic.twitter.com/7uqdfpp999
