Join the Hakai Magazine team’s migration to bioGraphic
We have big news! The Hakai Magazine team is joining bioGraphic to deepen its coverage of ocean and coastal stories. Both outlets faced budget shortfalls and uncertain futures in 2024, and with this opportunity we can continue publishing the independent journalism that our loyal readers love.
Starting in January 2025, we’ll become part of the 171-year-old California Academy of Sciences, the nonprofit research and education institution that supports bioGraphic, an online publication that tells stories about biodiversity, extraordinary discoveries, and innovations and ideas for sustaining life on Earth. The website looks a bit different from Hakai Magazine, but you’ll find the same deeply reported and rigorously accurate stories. Together, our team will continue to produce journalism about the world’s oceans and coasts, alongside dazzling photography and stories of conservation from every continent.
But to get there, we need your help. First, sign up for bioGraphic’s newsletter to get our stories delivered to your inbox every week. Then consider making a donation towards our 2025 budget.
Right now, we have enough funding from foundations to bring the Hakai Magazine senior staff to the bioGraphic team. Every dollar you donate will go toward hiring more of our talented and dedicated coworkers. That means we can produce more crucial stories about oceans, coasts, and biodiversity.
How to Help
Step 1: Sign up for bioGraphic’s newsletter, so you never miss a story.
Step 2: Make a donation to help us complete our 2025 budget. No amount is too small.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Hakai Magazine partnering with bioGraphic?
In June 2024, the Tula Foundation informed Hakai Magazine staff that it could no longer fund the magazine and would close the publication at the end of the year. At the same time, bioGraphic was facing a budget shortfall. By joining forces, we can combine our audiences, bringing more eyes to our stories and increasing our potential donor base, all under the auspices of, and with support from, the California Academy of Sciences. Hakai Magazine and bioGraphic share the same ethos and commitment to independent environmental journalism. The publications launched within a year of each other and have followed a similar trajectory over the past decade, including winning comparable journalism awards, hiring some of the same editors, and commissioning many of the same freelance writers. As one team, we can continue to deliver more of the stories that Hakai Magazine and bioGraphic readers know and love.
When will this joint venture begin?
We plan to bring Hakai Magazine team members on board at bioGraphic in January 2025. We will begin ramping up the publishing schedule to eventually produce three to five stories per week, including the latest news and our signature narrative features. And as this partnership evolves and grows, we will continue to revisit and explore how we tell stories about environmental issues and what experts are doing to resolve them. You will likely see an updated look and feel to the bioGraphic website in early 2025. But for now, our emphasis will be on expanding our coverage of some of the most important environmental issues of our time.
Are you building a paywall?
No. We will continue to publish all of our stories online, making them available for free with no limits on how much of our site you can see. Even if you can’t afford to support bioGraphic financially, your access to stories will not change. But if you value what we do and can afford it, please donate.
