Have you ever found the perfect Airbnb listing for your trip, only to get to checkout and discover that all sorts of extra charges have been added on top? Well, according to a recent study, that experience is more common in some parts of the US than others.
To find out which cities are most guilty of rip-off Airbnb fees, keycrew analyzed the room price, cleaning fee and service charge for listings across 84 major US cities, then calculated the average for each location.
The most expensive city to book an Airbnb stay in is Columbia, South Carolina, where an average of $207 in fees (or 40.78 percent) are added to a $505, five-night stay.
Two Florida cities also lump average fees of more than 40 percent on to the base rental rate: Cape Coral (40.67 percent) and Clearwater (40.61 percent). In fact, Florida dominates the top 10 list of rip-off cities.
Airbnb listings in California might show the lowest fees when it comes to percentages, but they often add the largest amounts in actual dollars.
Of the cities studied, you'll see the cheapest prices in Minneapolis, where 29 percent is added on to the base rate at checkout.
