Personal finance company WalletHub compared the 100 largest cities in America on metrics across four main categories β environment, transportation, energy sources and lifestyle and policy β to uncover the country's most sustainable cities.
Using WalletHub's ranking, Visual Capitalist mapped the 10 most green and 10 least green cities across the US.
Of the 10 greenest cities, more than half belong to California β including the top-ranking spot, San Diego, which scored 72.6 out of 100. Washington, DC, nabbed the second spot with a score of 71.8.
Glendale, Arizona, scored just 35.8, making it the least green city in the study. The Arizonan cities of Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler were also among the 10 lowest-ranking locations, with the intensity of the urban heat island and poor air and water quality just some of the factors driving the state's poor sustainability.
