Here's Where The Average Graduate Can Afford To Rent The Most Properties
According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, affordable rent is considered to be 30 percent or less of a person's gross income.
Using this rule, Career.io analyzed Zillow listings and the average bachelor's degree-level earnings for the 100 most populated US cities to find out the most renter-friendly locations for graduates. They also worked out which cities offer the most square footage for the average graduate paycheck.
The best area for graduate renters is Shreveport, Louisiana, where someone earning the local median bachelor's-level wage can afford 85.4 percent of the city's available properties.
There are four US cities where every single property is out of reach for the average graduate: Irvine, California; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Paterson and Elizabeth in New Jersey.
When it comes to the space a median graduate paycheck can get you, Frisco, Texas, offers the largest average property, at 1,509 square feet. The smallest average property available to the average graduate is found in Honolulu, Hawaii (395 square feet).
