Going to the movies can feel like buying stock โ it's expensive, and there's no guarantee your investment will pay off. so, what's a moviegoer to do when the odds are stacked against you?
While you can always listen to your gut, we've compiled a list that might help guide you on your trips to the theater in 2025. Yes, cinematic beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but with eggs costing this much, we're going to keep it real and call out the titles that probably don't deserve your $25 this year.
'Elio'
Does anybody remember "Lightyear," or the Oscar-nominated "Elemental" from Disney's studios? For a company known for its storytelling magic, the trailers for "Elio" suggest this Pixar animation flick might struggle to make a real-cultural impact. Directed by Adrian Molina ("Coco,") the story follows an 11-year-old boy who becomes Earth's unlikely ambassador to an alien civilization.
Despite its original premise and a voice cast that includes Jameela Jamil and Brad Garrett, early teasers have done little to ignite enthusiasm among Pixarโs fanbase. Its juvenile tone feels like they're catering to a Disney+ audience first, and don't intend it to be a cinema blockbuster. Given the underwhelming box office performances of recent Disney films, "Elio" could also end up struggling to fill theaters.
'Tron: Ares'
A direct sequel to 2010โs "Tron: Legacy," "Tron: Ares" will dive back into the cyber world, this time with Jared Leto leading the cast alongside Evan Peters and Greta Lee. Directed by Joachim Rรธnning ("Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,") everything pointing to the film's visuals look promising, but the lingering question remains: does anyone care about the Tron universe after 15 years? Also, if you're making a 15-year comeback, is Jared Leto really the guy you want to go with? Despite Leto's past performances, if "Morbius" was any indication, he might end up being one of the worst castings in history.

'snow White'
This live-action adaptation of Disneyโs first animated feature stars Rachel Zegler ("West side story") as snow White and Gal Gadot ("Wonder Woman") as the Evil Queen. Directed by Marc Webb ("The Amazing spider-Man,") the film has been surrounded by controversy since its announcement. Criticism of Zeglerโs casting and comments about reinterpreting the story as progressive have sparked debates among loyal Disney fans and traditionalists alike.
Live-action remakes have either been a hit, like "Lion King" in 2019, and made billions at the box office, but others like "Dumbo" haven't done so well.
'Captain America: Brave New World'
Despite being a Marvel blockbuster, "Captain America: Brave New World" is projected to have low opening-day collections. According to Deadline, audience interest appears muted due to general superhero fatigue and the lackluster reception of recent MCU films like" Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania."
Replacing steve Rogers with sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as Captain America has also drawn mixed reactions and even with the cast addition of Harrison Ford as General Ross, it might not be enough to get people off their couches and into the cinema for this one.
'Now You see Me 3'
"The Now You see Me" franchise returns with Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Mark Ruffalo reprising their roles, alongside the new faces Dominic sessa, Benedict Cumberbatch and Rosamund Pike. Directed by Ruben Fleischer ("Venom"), while Eisenberg recently revealed that shooting had wrapped, he didn't say anything else about the project.
so, after nine long-years, is the magic going to wear thin? The magic, and heist really need to be worth it, and anything short of spectacular is probably going to piss of long-time fans.
