According to the latest IRS data, the average household adjusted gross income (AGI) in the US stands at $92,577 — but in some areas, Americans take home several times that.

Using IRS data for the 2021 tax year, SmartAsset ranked the country's congressional districts by the percentage of households earning $200,000 or more a year.

The top three districts with the largest share of high earners were all in California: the 18th district (33.5 percent), the 17th district (27.7 percent) and the 33rd district (25.4 percent). In fact, six of the ten highest-ranking spots belonged to the Golden State.

The fourth-highest percentage of households earning at least $200,000 was found in New York's richest congressional district, NY-12 (22 percent).

When it comes to how much Americans are earning, California's 18th district topped the list again, with the AGI of its households averaging at $475,894. Households in NY-12 ranked second, with an average income of $327,479.
