Using 2023 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, USAFacts visualized how differently American men and women use the hours in their day.
In 2023, employed men aged 15 and older spent an average of 7.47 hours on paid work and work-related activities per weekday, compared to 6.52 hours for employed women.
When it comes to unpaid labor, on the other hand, employed women (2.34 hours) spent more time each weekday on caregiving and household activities than their male counterparts (1.31 hours).
A gender difference was also seen among unemployed people, with women working one hour, nine minutes more than men per day when paid work, household chores and caretaking were all taken into account.
The average woman also spends more time on childcare than the average man. Among parents of kids aged under six, women spent almost an hour more each day looking after their children.
Looking at race, the biggest gap between the time men and women dedicated to housework was seen among Hispanic/Latino Americans, with Hispanic/Latina women spending an average of one hour, 19 minutes more than their male counterparts on household activities every day.
