I for one welcome our new multi legged Lego overlords!

The eight leg walker gives things a go!

What's the best number of legs for a Lego robot walker? 2 legs? 4 legs? 8? 16? My money's on the 8 legs, but check out hurdy gurdy girl's post to see the surprising winner!

In this week's belated (or bleated, hey sheep happens) Free thread, Wordshore shares a great story about being late to a wedding. How late? Oh just one year, that's all, no biggie!

Morale of the story? Putting the year on wedding invitations is highly overrated!

Changes and improvements to MetaFilter

[COMMUNITY] MeFi's developers, both staff and members, have been tinkering away on several projects, making changes here and there, both on the current site and the planned new site.

First up is Frimble, who has put together a simple moderation log to track official mod comments and post deletions, the link is here and discussion about has been going on in this MetaTalk post.

Klipspringer looked at that project, decided it could use a few tweaks, like an archive, tags, and RSS feed, check it out in MeFi Projects.

Rhaomi (you know, the President of MetaFilter Interim Board) has been working with past developers and MeFi's own developer frimble to adapt the userscript MeFiQuote, to make it amazingly easier quote other users. It's live now, read the announcement post about how to turn it on!

Meanwhile, over in the future, kirkaracha continues working on the new site. It's still in the alpha stage, so not ready for full use, but it's moving forward! Follow along via the 'rebuild' tag in MetaTalk!

Finally, there's a new General Site Info FAQ entry where we aim to keep common links and info about the site. The link to it will remain in the site navigation bar at the top of every page, for easy access.

If you're looking for an ebook...

art from Callibre home page

In a great post about the e-book managing software Calibre, we got a fantastic comment made by trig. They gave a great rundown about what's on the ebook reader market, sharing lots of good thoughts about the pluses and minuses of the major brands. Seriously, if you're interested in ebooks at all, you should check out this comment!

LGBTQ life in America

Photo by Ludovic Bertron from New York City, U.S.

Two recent posts touch on different aspects of the gay community in America: First, constraint made a post about how LGBTQ people are taking steps to protect themselves by purchasing guns.

Second, ShooBoo shared a link to an NYT opinion piece on how Hooters, that bastion of classic and stereotypical heterosexual masculinity, has been meaningful to some young gay boys.

How hot is too hot?!

[COMMUNITY] This week's FREE thread wants to know "what situation, event, or incident were you hot, sweaty, comfortably or uncomfortably warm in, maybe needing to cool down?" Come fill us in on the details!

Corners are very important

If you want to be an architect, there's a lot you need to know, but not all of it is taught in schools. There are lists, long lists for sure, but oh so important, as this one shared by vincebowdren shows.

O Canada!

Photo by ishmael daro, via Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/93280928@N02/)

Canada is known for maple syrup, snow, hockey, and... liqueurs? Yes indeed as shown in asbury's post about several Canadian distilleries using ingredients from their country to make distinctive brands of alcohol.

Saskatoon berries! Nova Scotian honey! The northern haskap! O Canada indeed!

Solo Trumpet Going Bonkers

Ten Cold Hot Dog posted a single link to a 55 second YouTube link of an animated frog playing a trumpet. That's it, that's the share and it is delightful! Come for the frog, but stay for the captions if you're looking for a bit of fun to inject into your day!

Free Thread week of 3/17/2025

[COMMUNITY] Yes, yes, this week's FREE thread is a little late, we admit it. As such, it makes sense that the question/ theme of the week is "tardiness and/or belatedness". Come on it and take a load off as we loaf around and discuss the above or pretty much anything else folks want to talk about it.

Highlighting the best bits from the MetaFilter universe

MetaFilter started as a community weblog in 1999, later added question and answers, then music by members, jobs, projects by members, a podcast, and finally an area dedicated to meetups.
