Everyone wants a comfortable retirement, but depending on where in the US you live, you could need millions of dollars to do so.

Using data on the average cost of living, mortgages, Social Security benefits and more, GOBankingRates calculated how much money is needed to ensure 20 years of comfortable retirement in each state. See their full methodology here.

In Hawaii, it costs more than $3 million to retire comfortably. Residents would need to start saving $5,751 a month at age 20, or $7,394 a month at age 30, to put away the $3,105,384 needed to live to 85 years old.

There are 23 states where savings of more than $1 million are required to fund a comfortable, 20-year retirement, including California, Massachusetts, Washington, New Jersey, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Rhode Island, Alaska, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Arizona and Maine.

Just four states allow for retirees with less than $500,000 in savings to retire comfortably to the age of 85: West Virginia ($434,501), Mississippi ($442,620), Arkansas ($489,937) and Louisiana ($499,020).
