You'll Be Shocked By How Many Households Own These Weird Pets
People sure do love dogs, but what about uncommon pets?

Here in the United States, pet ownership is typical, but some pets are much more common than others.

What happens when you go beyond dogs and cats?

Redditor u/zwei4 put together a graph with estimated household numbers for different pet categories. They didn't include source information, so it's a little hard to fact check, but the data is interesting nonetheless.

No surprise, dogs take the top spot with 58 million households. Cats aren't that far behind with 40 million. Considering there are around 131 million households total, that seems about right.

Freshwater fish take the third spot, but the number is only nine million. That completely dwarfs the number of saltwater fish households (one million) though. Turns out, maintaining a saltwater tank is a huge pain in the butt.

Reptiles, not counting birds, are in six million households while birds find a home in five million households. Combine 'em together, and they'd top the fish.

Other small animals, like gerbils, have about five million households while horses are down at two million. Some people debate whether that equine number is true though.

So if you have the dirt on the real number of horsey households, feel free to comment below.

  2. But then again, the backstory behind the Hanna-Barbera flicktoon character Magilla Gorilla hath it that Peebles' Pet Store is offering him as a housepet unlike any other, with repeated attempts to sell him falling through, to the chagrin of Mr. Peebles.
