How much wealthier the rich are than the poor varies wildly from country to country โ€” and inequality is far higher in some parts of the world than others.

Using data from the Luxembourg Income Study, the team at Our World In Data visualized how far apart the incomes of the rich and poor are in different countries. The blue points show the monthly after-tax income of someone just inside the richest 10 percent of their country's population, while the red points show the income of someone just inside the poorest 10 percent.

Wealth inequality is especially high in South Africa, where the income of the richest 10 percent is at least 22 times higher than those in the bottom decile, who are among the poorest people in the world.

Income disparity is relatively small in Norway, with someone just inside the top decile earning only around three times more than a person in the bottom 10 percent.

In the US, the difference between rich and poor people's incomes is twice that of Norway's. The lowest earners in America are worse off than those in the European country too, earning $1,240 or less compared to Norway's $1,760.

Using a logarithmic scale is kind of weird, money isn't non-linear, and it flattens the disparity between rich and poor in a country, and between rich and poor countries. It would also be very interesting to compare the US with the other 37 OECD countries to see the differences across relatively rich countries.
