When we talk about politics in America, the states are often referred to as "red" for Republican or "blue" for Democratic, depending on things like voting patterns, the party affiliations of governors and House representatives and state legislation. Less predictable states, on the other hand, are known as "swing" or "purple" states.

Since 1988 β€” nine US presidential elections ago β€” 43 states have voted for the same party seven times or more. Of those states, 20 voted for the same party in all nine elections.

Not all states are as consistent, though. Seven β€” Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia β€” have voted for each party at least three times across those nine elections, while Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin gave their votes to different parties' candidates in the country's last two elections.

Using data from the Federal Election Commission, USAFacts made an interactive chart that shows the margins of victory in each state for every national election since 1988. How red or blue is your state?
