A 65-year-old man fell 130 feet to his death at the Grand Canyon on Thursday.

At about 2 p.m. on Thursday, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office received a call to help the Hualapai Nation in a technical recovery at Guano Point, according to a statement shared by the sheriff’s office on Friday.

“A 65-year-old male had slipped and fell over the edge into the canyon and was deceased,” the statement said. “Search and Rescue responded and located him about 130 feet down on a scree pile.” A scree pile is an accumulation of loose, broken rock fragments at the base of a cliff.

The victim’s identity was not released by authorities.

Technical rope technicians constructed a lowering-and-raising system that they used to recover the body before conveying it to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Hualapai Tribal Police Department, Hualapai Nation Fire and Grand Canyon West Security also assisted with the recovery, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office’s statement.

The sheriff’s office released images of first responders attempting to retrieve the victim’s body.
