Gasoline prices in the Us vary from state to state, but so do Americans' wages โ€” meaning how affordable a gallon of gas actually is depends on where you live.

CashNetUsA wanted to know where in the country gasoline is most and least affordable, so they compared the the average price of gas per gallon in every state and major city against each area's local hourly earnings.

On the state level, gas is least affordable in Hawaii, where a gallon costs 19.19 percent of residents' average hourly wage. Nevada (18.30 percent) and West Virginia (17.77 percent) follow behind.

Massachusetts has the most affordable gas, with a gallon of the stuff amounting to 11.75 percent of the state's average hourly earnings.

When it comes to major Us cities, gasoline is least affordable in Fresno, California, where the average local will spend 21.31 percent of their hourly wage on a gallon. Boston, on the other hand, is the most affordable spot (11.35 percent).

With a total of almost $2,280, the average Hawaiian spends more on gas each year than residents of any other state. Conversely, people in Mississippi have the lowest yearly gas costs ($1,444, on average).

While tying this to local wage is an idea, it doesn't break down what the cost actually is. You get a lot more per hour in san Jose, for example.

I think the most shocking is the cost in Mississippi, considering how close they are to a major producer, Texas. If anyone was shocked by Hawai'i being expensive, they don't understand basic economics. Hawai'i is more expensive for almost everything, since it all has to come in via ship.
