Don't look now, but we're just 34 days away from election day here in the US. Unfortunately, the home stretch is where things usually end up getting the messiest, with some sort of nightmarish October surprise looming in the background.

But, in spite of the ever-present dread, here's what's happening in the race this week.

Walz vs. Vance is going to get messy during tonight's debate on CBS

Vice presidential nominees traditionally play the role of attack dog for the top of their tickets — in this case, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump.

But Walz and Vance have also hammered each other for months. Walz earned the Democratic vice presidential nod in part because of his branding of the GOP ticket as "weird" in television interviews that served as semi-auditions for the role. Vance, a military veteran, has questioned Walz's service record.

Trump tries to turn North Carolina's suffering into political gains

Separately, Biden reacted angrily to remarks from Trump, who criticized Biden's response to the hurricane during a trip to Georgia on Monday and claimed that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) had trouble reaching Biden. Kemp and Biden confirmed the two spoke on Sunday.

"He's lying, and the governor told him he was lying. The governor told him he's lying. I've spoken to the governor, spent time with him, and he told him he's lying. I don't know why he does it… that's simply not true, and it's irresponsible," Biden said in response to Trump.

Israel's growing war in the Middle East threatens stability in the region, but the Biden administration supports it anyway

The United States appeared out of step with the rest of the globe as it pledged its support for Israel's ground incursion into Lebanon.

While voices from across the world on Tuesday urged a ceasefire and a step back from the brink of all-out war, Washington declared the "limited" ground offensive into southern Lebanon as "Israel's right to defend itself."
