While overall happiness has declined in the US since 2010, research shows that how content Americans are differs widely from state to state.
Using analysis by WalletHub β which scored each US state on metrics like life expectancy, number of hours worked and economic security β Visual Capitalist mapped where in the country people are most and least happy.
America's happiest state is Hawaii, where residents enjoy the longest life expectancy, highest life satisfaction and lowest adult depression rates overall.
Second place goes to Maryland, whose 2.9 percent unemployment rate is the lowest in the country. The state is also home to the highest share of households earning more than $75,000 a year.
Louisiana is the least happy state in the US, ranking 45th for number of hours worked and 50th when it comes to safety. Arkansas and West Virginia follow closely behind.
