If you saw our post on the world's tallest countries, you'll know that the average person in the Netherlands is taller than anywhere else โ€” but which country has the shortest people?

Based on NCD Risk Factor Collaboration data, the map below shows the 20 shortest countries in the world, by average height. For reference, the average human is 5 feet 4 inches tall.

Topping the list is Timor-Leste, where the height of the average man and woman is 5 foot 2.9 inches and 4 feet 11.5 inches, respectively. Laos and Madagascar follow behind.

The majority of the 20 shortest countries worldwide belong to Asia and Africa.

  1. Japan changed fast. i went in 1980 to find my mother who gave me up when i was a year old. i was 4'11" hoping to find adult shoes that would fit. Unfortunately by then the average ht for women was 5'4". Better nutrition.

I am surprised that you did not include Japan. The Japanese are a very short race, mainly due to diet in the early 20th century. When I travelled there in 1970, I, at 180cms, was by far the tallest person around and everybody wanted to have their photo with me, the giant!
