Every day, somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on X from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.

This week, we've got a very Freudian tweet, a basketball star sucking up to Musk and some unhinged reactions to a woman's PhD.

Sunday

Arthur Kwon Lee

Note: Discussion of suicidal ideation.

The character: Arthur Kwon Lee, "blacklisted Christian painter for the warrior class," mom-thinker

The plot: Arthur here recently posted a video on X of a woman doing a provocative dance, and then made a stink about it being "suicide fuel" for a future generation.

The repercussion: This is obviously an awful, regressive conception of women — no major analysis needed there. But the idea that children would be driven to suicide because a parent did a sexy dance one time is completely outrageous. People didn't respond well to this at all, but Arthur kept posting through it.

Grant Brunner

Sunday

Scottie Pippen

The character: Scottie Pippen, NBA champion, fan of Elon Musk

The plot: On Sunday, basketball legend Scottie Pippen shared an AI-generated image of Elon Musk in the Chicago Bull's number 13 jersey, along with the tweet: "How many championships would we have won with @ElonMusk?"

The repercussion: People were confused by Pippen's seemingly random decision to suck up to Musk via a cringey AI picture, and didn't mince their words about it.

Wednesday

Dr Ally Louks

The character: Ally Louks, PhD student, woman just living her life

The plot: Last Wednesday, Cambridge student Dr Ally Louks posted a totally innocuous tweet about completing her PhD. Louks's PhD is titled "Olfactory Ethics: The politics of smell in modern and contemporary prose."

The repercussion: While a normal, well-adjusted person would find no issue with her post, Louks has ended up on the receiving end of a truly staggering amount of hate and vitriol.

From mind-bogglingly sexist responses to people who clearly don't understand what a PhD is, the most unpleasant people on X really showed up for this one. You'll be glad to know, though, that Louks — remarkably, admirably — hasn't let it get her down.

Read the previous edition of our One Main Character column, which featured a bad take about reading, an out-of-touch tech guy, more Marques Brownlee controversy, another weird post from Bill Ackman and someone who really enjoys wearing dresses to "own the libs."

My very shy and conservative mother died last year. My dad and I worked through those first awful days by staying up all night, drinking, crying, spilling secrets and talking shit.

I had no idea my mother was THE party girl in their friendship group when they got together. She loved to dance and drink and flirt - there was even an engagement I didn’t know about that she broke off because “he was boring and (my dad) could play guitar”!

I’m not disturbed. I am so thrilled to know she had this fantastic life. Now when I picture her, I see more than my mother, I see a young woman, dancing on the beach with bare feet and drinking champagne with Air Force pilots as the sun rises.

Tldr - screw that guy, women have lives that don’t revolve around kids that aren’t even born yet.

When my father passed away, I found a collection of tasteful nude pictures of my mother in her youth.

    I survived.

I would also like to survive.

      With her permission, of course
