On April 1, 2024, Germany became the third European Union country to legalize the personal use of marijuana, after Malta and Luxembourg.

To show where else in the world cannabis has been decriminalized, Visual Capitalist mapped the countries that have passed laws to make recreational marijuana legal, as well as the dates they licensed sales (where applicable).

While marijuana is still considered an illegal substance in the US, the drug is legal in 24 states, three territories and the District of Columbia โ€” though laws around sales and usage vary from state to state.

Like the US, Australia does not permit marijuana use at the national level, but it's legal in the Australian Capital Territory, which includes the country's capital of Canberra.

In Uruguay, recreational weed use was legalized back in 2013, with sales first licensed in July 2017. Georgia, South Africa and Canada all passed laws decriminalizing cannabis in 2018, but only Canada has licensed sales of the drug.
