Despite spending a whopping $12,600 on healthcare costs, the average American has a life expectancy of just 77.5 years β€” and in some parts of the country, that number is even lower.

Using 2019 data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Reddit user oscarleo0 mapped the US counties where residents have an average life expectancy of less than 75 years.

The majority of counties with lower life expectancies are clustered in Southern states such as Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Kentucky, which also see disproportionately high poverty levels and poorer health compared to the rest of the US.

Alaska, Arizona, Nevada and Montana are also home to high numbers of counties with life expectancies below 75 years.

While global life expectancy has risen rapidly over the past two centuries, America is trailing behind, thanks to major socioeconomic inequality and slow development. According to Our World In Data, there are now 19 US counties where people can expect to live shorter lives than the worldwide average of 71.4 years.

One likely explanation for such low life expectancy numbers in the South:

    "Cultural heritage and folkways," perchance?
