A dog biting a postal worker might seem like a scene reserved for a cartoon, but it's surprisingly common. In 2023 alone, the United States Postal Service reported more than 5,800 dog attacks on its employees.
Using USPS data, USAFacts mapped the cities with the highest number of reported dog attacks on mail carriers in 2023, and charted the states where incidents have increased the most compared to the previous year.
Overall, postal workers in Los Angeles (65), Houston (56) and Chicago (48) experienced the most dog bites on their mail routes. St. Louis (46), Cleveland (44) and San Diego (41) also reported a considerable number of incidents.
When it comes to the states where dog attacks on mail people have increased the most, Illinois topped the list. The number of reported dog bites in the Prairie State stood at 316 in 2023, up 29 percent from 2022.
In terms of actual numbers, the states that reported the most dog bites on USPS employees were California (727) and Texas (411).
