The Disciples

The Disciples, by James Mollison. A series of 56 photo montages of music fans outside concerts. It's all about the clothes and the community and the music. This is the web page for an in-person exhibition I wish I'd seen. There's a 5 1/2 minute video (with relevant music) as part of the experience.

This is great, fandom is an amazing inflection point for fashion.

The Oasis boys, the Tori Amos girrls, the Merle Haggard men, I love them and their dedication.

This is pretty cool. I’d love to see the entire exhibit. Does anyone know if there are shots newer than 2011 in the collection?

This reminds me a lot of the Exactitudes project. (note: takes a while to load, scrolls sideways, some incidental NSFW-ness).

The Disciples photos are amazing!

Exactitudes has some very nice photos hidden behind a bad UX (bad on desktop. on mobile it actually works fine) If not for adamrice's warnings I would have assumed the page was just broken. If you see a flashing grid of thumbnails, just click anywhere. Then you can use the left and right arrow keys to scroll left and right.

I love examining my assumptions and these photos are great for that. Why do some groups seem more inherently approachable than others, what is my bias built on? What do I need to examine and question within myself? How much of it do I agree with when it comes to light? Plus, I expect incredible variety vis a vis how friendly and safe different people feel each group is and that's just so neat. A great reminder that "normal" is a shifting and untrustworthy term when applied to people, haha.

I've apparently been dressing like a Tori Amos fan for most of my life, and that's okay. I love the Bjork group, who have the most whimsy, and the creativity of the Gaga fans. The happiest of the bunch seem to be the Katy Perry fans, who are all smiling, and the most glowering are the Oasis guys. i guess expression and posture is part of the image too.

You can see more in this Guardian article, including Iggy Pop, U2, and Radiohead (the identification key is at the end, the idea is to guess the band by looking at the fans). On Mollinson's site, you can catch a glimpse of the Rolling Stones group in a picture of the exhibition itself, where you can also see that the displayed images are life size.

OMFG! Musically I'm Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard but visually I'm an Arctic Monkey! Mostly because I'm usually a t-shirt guy.
