Pew Research analysts looked at goods price changes across US metro areas to see which ones inflated more than others. They looked at metro-area data from Bureau of Labor Statistics, comparing recent (July or August 2024) price index values with those from early 2020.
Consumer prices in August 2024 were 22 percent higher than what they were in January 2020, and the price ranges in metro-areas ranged from 29.8 percent (Tampa Bay area) to 16.6 percent (San Francisco Bay area).
Pew's analysis also found that electricity prices in the SF Bay Area had the biggest increase since early 2020, while rent in the area had the smallest bump.
Alcohol beverage prices have had a varying past four years. In the Miami metro area they now cost 7.3 percent cheaper, while prices in the Seattle metro area they've gone up by 35 percent.
Other items with significant price increases include used cars (around 30 percent increase in 16 of 23 metros analyzed) and dining out (as high as 35.1 percent more expensive in one area).
