The Average American Budget Looks Like This
Households in the Us spend an average of $8,484 a month โ€” but where does that money go?

Using data from Motley Fool, Visual Capitalist visualized the average monthly budget for households in the Us. Annual figures for 2023 have been converted to monthly spending.

Nearly half of the average American household's monthly budget went towards housing, taxes and savings. Housing was the biggest expense overall, costing $2,120 a month, on average.

Just over $500 a month was spent on groceries in 2023, but staple food items have become pricier since then, thanks to inflation.

Entertainment accounted for the smallest share of the average household's monthly expenditure, with just $303 of the budget spent in that area.

As the average after-tax salary in the United states is $58,389 per year, or $4,865 per month, this seems highly suspect. Less than half of Americans would be able to cover a $1,000 emergency expense without turning to a credit card or loan, and 60% of Americans lack a retirement-specific savings/brokerage account.

We're a married couple with no kids and a mortgage. We make half a mill a year and our monthly budget is less than this.

For 2 working adults making 52k/year this is conceivable but unlikely. These numbers can't be right given the majority of people couldn't manage a $1k unexpected bill. Average is a poor metric for this because the top 5% skew the numbers drastically.

Lol, this chart is a complete joke... this is how you tell everyone around you you're a nepo-baby living off a trust fund without outright saying it.

Yeah, hard to believe the average American puts away close to $1k in savings every month...
