A well-deserved cultural moment for Glenn Close.

Lee Daniels's new film "The Deliverance" was released on August 30, 2024, marking a move into the supernatural horror genre for the director. With his previous credits including the 2009 drama film "Precious" and co-creating television series "Empire" and "Star," fans of Daniels will be happy to know that while "The Deliverance" is a horror film, it's one that still sleeps with a nightlight.

Featuring an all-star Hollywood cast, the film sees a return of familiar faces for Daniels, with Andra Day, Mo'Nique and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, along with the exciting addition of eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close.

The film is inspired by the Ammons haunting case, an alleged incident of "demonic possession" reported to have occurred in 2011 in Gary, Indiana. The story, publicized three years later, reports the claims of Latoya Ammons, her biological mother Rosa Campbell, and her three young children, who all claim they were possessed after moving into a new home.

Watching the film myself, I couldn't help but feel the subtle warmth one can find in Daniels's work, even when he chooses to direct more mature, dark stories like this. Though, as a horror film, the experience feels like a kiddie roller coaster, especially if you're already an enthusiast.

Just days after its release, Glenn Close quickly became the internet's next favorite meme, thanks to campy moments Daniels inserted to pad the film's heavier scenes.

I would definitely put this on for your family, friend or spouse who hates horror films. Even with a gore scene entering the frame late into the film, the movie is honestly too hard not to laugh at with Close playing the badass grandma we all wished we had, lending itself to some of the film's most memorable moments. Ironically, the grandma she plays is actually alluded to being a horrible person, though we're never shown those scenes. However, neither the internet nor Daniels seems to care, despite it being a pretty important element of the film.

Netflix is scarier with their password-sharing crackdown than this whole damn script. We may not want to give them a bigger check every month with their new prices, but we can at least give them four stars for this new Halloween-time fan favorite.

Thought it was a boring slog of a movie. Glenn Close must be getting desparate for roles.
