Yngwie Johann Malmsteen Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor with the New Japan Philharmonic is somehow both ridiculous and completely amazing. Perhaps the only combination of rock and orchestral music I have seen that actually works.

(BTW: nothing says FPPs have to be long, heavily researched, or attract tons of favorites or discussion. I'd say that many, if not most, of the links here would work as-is on the main site. I'm not saying it's bad to post them here, after all I do it too, but FPPs don't need much effort themselves, and a greater variety off FPPs enriches us all!)

A few months back I made a post about Kinzang Lhamo, the Bhutanese Olympian (and her determination to finish the marathon despite being dead last). A few people in that thread wondered what her reaction to the whole thing was, and this piece in The Bhutanese is the closest thing to that insight I've seen, for those who may be curious:

this summer, the project received full 'environmental clearance' for the entire 463 miles from downtown LA to downtown San Francisco, with clearance for a further 31 miles from LA to Anaheim expected next year. Nearly all of the thousands of necessary land parcels have been secured.

The new Underworld album, Strawberry Hotel, came out last week. It's full of what the kids would call "bangers".

The second track, "Denver Luna", has been out for a while now, and it's one of my favorite songs of the year.

Underworld's music is, loosely speaking, an idiosyncratic fusion of Karl Hyde's stream-of-consciousness poetry and Rick Smith's techno/house beats. Even if you aren't well-versed in their oeuvre, you might remember their song "Born Slippy (Nuxx)" from the Trainspotting soundtrack.

Maybe you've heard about redlining in the 1930s-40s in the US? Well, it's still a thing. Racial residential segregation is a fundamental cause of racial health disparities. In fact, the US is more segregated today than in the 1990s... Video/podcast and blog post with great links and resources from an academic team affiliated with the American Public Health Association.
