With almost 400 million firearms in civilian possession, America has more guns than people โ and ownership rates are significantly higher in some states than others.
Using 2024 data from the Pew Research Center, compiled by Data Pandas, Visual Capitalist mapped gun ownership rates in each US state.
The highest gun ownership rate in the country is in Montana, where 66.3 percent of adult residents own a firearm.
There are three others states where at least 60 percent of the population has a gun: Wyoming (66.2 percent), Alaska (64.5 percent) and Idaho (60.1 percent).
New Jersey and Massachusetts are at the bottom of the ranking, with both reporting a gun ownership rate of just 14.7 percent.
