Across the US, single moms run nearly 17 percent of households with children under the age of 18 โ but that figure varies widely from state to state.
Using data from the Badger Institute, Visual Capitalist mapped the share of single-mom households in each US state.
After the federal district of Washington, DC, where 29 percent of households are run by single moms, the highest rates in the country belong to the South.
Mississippi (24 percent) has a larger share of single-mother households than any other state, followed by Louisiana (23 percent), Alabama (20 percent), Georgia (20 percent) and South Carolina (20 percent).
The lowest share of single-mom households is found in Utah (nine percent), where the Mormon religion (Utah's majority demographic) discourages people from having children outside of marriage. Idaho (11 percent) and Hawaii (11 percent) are tied for the second-lowest rate.
