Health insurance companies are at the center of renewed discourse following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York earlier this month. According to recent polls, almost half of Americans hold an unfavorable view of the US healthcare system, while 62 percent blame health insurance companies for the system's problems.
Health insurance giants accounted for four of the top 20 companies in the Fortune 500 in 2023, with a combined revenue of almost $1.1 trillion. Using figures from the American Medical Association, Visual Capitalist presented America's largest health insurers by market share.
UnitedHealth Group, which ranks eighth on the 2024 Fortune Global 500, tops the list with a market share of 15 percent as of last year. Elevance Health (12 percent) and CVS (Aetna) (12 percent) are tied for second place.
Rounding off the top five are Cigna and Health Care Service Corporation, which had market shares of 11 percent and seven percent, respectively.
