According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, affordable housing is that which amounts to no more than 30 percent of a household's income. In many parts of the country, however, Americans are spending far more than this to rent a home.
The team at CashNetUSA wanted to know where in the US is most affordable to rent, so they used Census data and Zillow's Observed Rent Index to rank ZIP codes based on the percentage of their local income that goes towards rental costs. Only ZIP codes of cities with at least 100,000 people were included.
The most affordable rent was found in Leawood, Kansas, where the average local spends just 10.57 percent of their income on rent. Another Kansas spot, Overland Park (11.03 percent), takes second place.
Renters in Great Kills spend less of their earnings on housing than anywhere else in NYC, with the area's rent costing around 21 percent of the average income.
Los Angeles doesn't have a single ZIP code where the average home is affordable to rent according to the 30 percent rule.
The study identified two US cities where no homes can be rented for less than 30 percent of the local average income: Irvine and Carlsbad in California.
