In 2023 domestic air travel in America reached its pre-2020 highs, peaking at more than 819,000 passenger enplanements on domestic flights.
This year, travelers paid an average of $388 on their domestic airfare. SmartAsset analyzed prices from 74 airports to see where tickets had cooled, based on passenger volume and airfare changes over the past two years.
The top three airports where domestic airfare prices have dropped year-over-year are all in Florida: Southwest Florida International (-8.9 percent), Ford Lauderdale-Hollywood International (-six percent) and Palm Beach International (-5.5 percent).
The Metro Oakland International airport saw the biggest price increase, with 10 percent since 2023, and among airports with the highest airfare in 2024, only two airports saw price dips: Charlotte Douglas International (-1.3 percent) and Salt Lake City (-1.5 percent.)
Among the ten cheapest airfare options in America, four airports saw their prices dip, while the other six saw increases between 1.9 and 8.2 percent.
