Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) exceeded 1.6 million in the US in 2023, but not all Americans are on board with the clean car revolution.

Using Department of Energy data, Visual Capitalist mapped the number of registered EVs per 100,000 people in each state. The figures are from June 2024 and only all-electric vehicles were included in the analysis.

EVs are most popular in California, where there are 3,026 for every 100,000 residents. Washington takes second place (1,805), followed by Hawaii (1,686).

Drivers in Mississippi are least keen on electric cars, with just 110 registered per 100,000 people in the state. North Dakota (112) and Louisiana (165) have been similarly slow to adopt EVs.
