Hi, metafilter moderator here, posting an experimental thread, based on a recent suggestion by Rhaomi. Here's the idea, paraphrasing:
"Find a neat article, video, blog, etc. but don't feel up to the work of cobbling together an FPP, tags, title, and otherwise putting yourself out there? Just comment "LinkMe:" followed by the link and maybe a one sentence description for context. Everybody has tacit permission to turn your link into an FPP if they'd like, first come first serve, with a nod back to the original LinkFilter comment"
An example of the type of comment to make is inside, but don't feel bound to that exact format!
This post was made by a moderator to let members know that this is an experiment and explain the idea. Nothing is set in stone, just trying it out to see how it goes.
If things move forward with this and/or the other types of posts mentioned in Rhaomi's suggestion, then the posts could certainly be made by members themselves.

LinkMe: In a few hours my favorite YouTube channel drawfee will begin their annual Pride fundraiser, streaming on twitch. This is the second year they will be doing a Trans Rigs stream, playing American Truck Simulator with real road trip rules. During last year's 4 hour trans rigs stream they raised over $100k for the Stonewall Community Foundation.

Please just keep it to this thread. Rhaomi's original idea is to do this monthly and expand to other subsites, but for now we're just doing it here and we'll see how it goes.

Adding on to this - if anyone wants to take an inkscape-for-crafts/fiber arts tack rather than an embroidery tack, I just today discovered the world of people using Inkscape for sewing pattern drafting/adjustments.

Praemunire, I learned to bead mostly by watching NA artist videos on YouTube and itās staggering, the scale and artistry and originality. I thought oh itās like cross stitch or pixel art and then very quickly realised how three dimensional and textural beading is, especially with complex shaped pieces, plus the meaning of different images and techniques. I highly recommend trying some beading because it gives you a sense of the huge skill and thought behind those pieces. I absolutely loved that piece thank you for the link.

LinkMe: a pdf list of Chicago streets with notes on where their names come from. Offers some insight into the history and development of the city. Might go well with some additional notes on Chicago city planning (Burnham plan, &c) and architectural history (the post-World's Fair fates of some beautiful buildings) or maybe with similar background on the origins of names in other major cities.

Linkme: Here's the Damned from early in their career playing Love Song. They're touring right now and despite the fact that they're old, they're quite entertaining.
Somewhere I have a copy of a music vid they did in black & white possibly shot on super8 but I'm not sure that really captured the chaotic essence of the early days of punk but it's apparently not widely distributed because I couldn't find it on line. I got it as an extra from the 90's when the music companies were experimenting with adding content to cd's to take advantage of "Them new fangled computy machines"!

Or would there be some searchable way to say "give me all of the LinkMe ideas" or (even better) "give me all of the LinkMe ideas that don't have an FPP yet"? That would mean bringing it in as a data element somewhere that could be queried. If this experiment works, it might be a good next step to take.

One thought about this (or should it be in MeTa?). Is there a way that we can state explicitly that members can mine these threads for links to build FPPs? At the moment, if you did it, the "New Post" process would flag it as already posted, and that might deter a "early-career poster"....

Pretty sure we're in the clear here, since I believe (and testing now seems to confirm) the New Post process doesn't look for duplicate links from older comments, only for duplicate links from older front page posts.

I just posted about Bill Anders' death, noting it was via JoeZydeco's LinkMe above. For the record I got no "double" warning (at least, not about the LinkMe post; there were warnings about the wikipedia entry for Apollo 8 which has been included in FPPs numerous times.)

Feel free! The idea is to avoid putting a spotlight on any one poster/post and making sharing easier and lower-stakes, but a comment or follow-up (hopefully positive or at least constructive) is welcome.

Yeah I chose that tag as a simple one that hasn't really been used in the past (just a single post in 2001 and two comments in 2005), which can be searched for easily, either to find a link you posted by searching your profile or a search across all shares in all posts. And ofc you can search one's favorites for "LinkMe" to find ones bookmarked. Sort of like a simplified del.icio.us or Pinboard.

Yeah I chose that tag as a simple one that hasn't really been used in the past (just a single post in 2001 and two comments in 2005), which can be searched for easily, either to find a link you posted by searching your profile or a search across all shares in all posts. And ofc you can search one's favorites for "LinkMe" to find ones bookmarked. Sort of like a simplified del.icio.us or Pinboard.

If we start chatting about one another's links here, do we run the risk of reducing the participation or value of an eventual FPP? Maybe if we feel inclined to discuss it, just grabbing the link and making a post would be better in that case?
I don't know, genuinely asking. The last thing I want to do is start building a more proscriptive structure around this, because the thing I appreciate about it is, here's a new thing we're going to try, low pressure, let's just see what happens. From an entirely practical viewpoint, I think a thread mixing random unrelated links and discussion around those links might be kind of a mess, but we also do freeform open threads with a lot of randomness, so maybe that model is workable? Lithub has all of the audio versions, but for the text versions in NYRB we'd have to ungate each link individually. The series is ongoing.
