Star Wars Filming Locations Around The World, Mapped

Star Wars Filming Locations Around The World, Mapped
Not only has every continent been home to a Star Wars planet, each filming location brought something new to the table visually.

What does the real Star Wars universe look like? Well, mostly just cherry-picked countries in various pockets around the globe. You might already know about the 1976 filming of "Star Wars" in the Tunisian desert, or Redwood National Park being the forest moon of Endor, but most real world places don't get quite the attention or infamy. Statista mapped out all the locations where Star Wars cities were filmed.

'Star Wars,' 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi'

The original trilogy, aka the best ones, had the most unique locations. We will not be getting into a green screen special effects conversation, so spare us the comments.

The rebel base at Yavin 4 was filmed in Tikal, Guatemala. Tatooine and the Mos Eisley spaceport was shot in various places in Tunisia, while Hoth is famously Hardangerjøkulen, Norway. The forest moon of Endor is George Lucas' backyard: the redwood forests of Del Norte County, California. Jabba's Palace is actually Death Valley National Park and also had some some pick-up shots come from Bedfordshire, England.

'The Phantom Menace,' 'Attack of the Clones' and 'Revenge of the Sith'

Filming returned to Tunisia as the place to portray Tatooine (get used to the series returning to this desert planet a ton more). For the new planets, some locations in Spain and the UK's Cassiobury Park became the Naboo forest scene, the Palace of Caserta in Italy doubled as the Naboo Royal Palace, and Mount Etna's volcanic eruptions were composited into that one fight at Mustafar.

The Wookie home planet of Kashyyyk was actually a combination of Guilin, China and Phang Nga Bay, Thailand. Grindelwald, Switzerland was made into Alderaan, but mainly as additional mountain scenery composited into existing footage using SFX. It's hard to divide a shooting location for these movies from the extensive amount of post-production used, since so much of these movies were (infamously) shot on sets with blue screens behind the actors.

The modern movies

"Rogue One" created Planet Eadu by shooting in Reynisifjara, Iceland, and Planet Scarif by filming in Laamu Atoll, Maldives. The Imperial Base was actually the Canary Wharf from England, and the planets Jedha and Pasaana were both shot in Wadi Rum, Jordan. "Solo" used the Dolomites in Italy as Vandor-1, and the Canary Islands in Spain as the surface of Savareen.

The new trilogy introduced a lot of new worlds, mainly filming in various parts of the United Kingdom for what became Takodana and D'Qar. Skellig Michael, Ireland, was one such memorable setting, as Luke Skywalker's refuge in Ahch-To. The Starkiller Base was actually Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland, and Rub' al Khali, UAE was Rey's home planet of Jakku. And rounding things out, Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia became the salt flats of Crait, and Dubrovnik, Croatia served as the casino city Canto Bight.
