When it comes to US health insurance companies, UnitedHealthcare dominates the market overall — but, the top health insurer varies widely on the state level.
The map below, based on figures from the American Medical Association, shows each state's biggest health insurance companies, based on total enrollments in 2023.
Nationwide, there are 13 states where a single health insurer covers at least half of the market share: Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Hawaii, Illinois, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Vermont, Delaware, Indiana, West Virginia, Mississippi and Montana.
The country's most concentrated health insurance market is in Alabama, where Blue Cross Blue Shield accounts for 86 percent of all enrollments.
